LS1 still runs lean and trips codes...
HI:
My '02 LS1 (installed in an '84 Trans Am) is tripping lean codes. both left and right bank "sstem too lean" codes are being tripped.
I had the fuel pressure checked and it's in range. I had a GM tech tool hooked up to it and nothing was found wrong. I sprayed the engine with brake cleaner hoping to hear an rpm change (find a vacuum leak) but I'm not sure what else to do.
Am I overlooking something obvious? is there a common area for these engines to leak and run lean? Whatever it is it's causing both sides to run lean..
any other suggestions? would the '02 sensors go bad?
the engine, though it came from a wrecked car, has only 23k miles on it.
It has run fine at first but ahs recently developed these problems.
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
-BV

I agree. If you de-screen the MAF get a new one.
what have you recently done to your car? I can help you
I've been playing with my ever since I hit 500 miles. It now has 126,000 miles al driven hard and its just my going out car (So it has to run **** and with good street manners) or messing around car when I leave the lady at home.
If you pulled intake manifold off and you did not install it right you will have a vacum leak and that will set off a lean codes.
Any air not beening regestered by MAF (Making way to the engine undected)(leak) the PCM does not know its coming in so it does not supply the correct amount of fuel. The O2 sensors pick it up and and PCM try to adjust it self but manifold vacum and pressure keep changing and the PCM cant keep up.
So if after the MAF there is a leak it will cause a lean condition.
Check the hose clamps of the Air duct (tube) to the thorttle body

thank you all. I'll check for leaks.
The engine was a "pull out" from a wrecked '02 car. never took the intake off. never tore it down. it only had 22k miles and it ran fine when I first installed it, and now it's giving me these trouble codes. I got at least 500 miles on it before any codes started to show up.
a mechanic friend of mine suspected the MAF on it, too. the one that came with it was a deplhi brand, but was definitely not oem to my engine. (no screen and was larger) so I replaced it with a granatelli unit that is spec'd for my car. it's brand new.
still trips the lean codes.
the cold air kit is from f-body motorsports, if it matters. I have everything clamped, but I'll look into it and search for leaks.
I do have all the emmisions equipment on it- so I will check those this weekend and search for leaks.
I want to get the car certfied but can't until I fix this. furthermore I signed up for track time at a race track next month. I sure don't want to take the car there running lean!
Thanks again
