If your gears are correct, you don't need a wide operating range. You've only got "X" amount of rev range in each gear. Shift right and a "narrow" powerband is great.

would the ASA cam be a good "cam only" choice? im thinking about this cam. i have an 98 M6 and when i get my cam i will be installing the following. cam (obviously), 918's w/ hardened pushrods, LS6 intake w/p/p tb, LT's with ORX and 1 chamber flowmasters. will this be a good setup. i have stock 3.42's for now. will those gears kill the cam or will it be ok untill i get a 12 bolt with 4.10's? also will this setup be ok with my stock 806 heads? also a tune will be done prior to the install. can anyone suggest anything else to support the cam?

gears will even help the stock cam. you only need ls6 springs and dont need hardend pushrods. 806 heads should be fine. If youre motivated and have money you could get some ls6 heads. And mill the heads to optimize the compression for that cam. Also a differnt gaskets for a tighter quench.

the only reason i was going with the hardened rods and heavier springs was to be sure i was safe running it to 6500 rpm. plus, eventully, i want to go with a hotter cam and spin it to 7k so i know ill need them sometime. may as well get them and be safe. i plan eventully to get LS6 heads and have them worked, but for now thas not in my budget. i just want to get a good cam and exhaust setup. then milk the 10 bolt this spring and around summer/fall spring for a 12 bolt with 4.10's . i just want to make sure that the 3.42's isint going to limit the cam to the point where it dosent make sense to get it without gears.

best bang for the buck would be a used tr224 cam with 918 springs.
