Default asa questions

i have heard that valve reliefs need to be cut in the pistons to use the GMPP ASA, can anyone that runs this cam tell me if this is true? also is the asa worth buying over the hot cam? or are both of these not worth the time to put in. im only looking for a total of about 400-425 to the wheels when im fully done.

Very doubtful with stock heads.... 226/236? It should clear by a long shot.

I read an article by a GM engineer and they stated the ASA is worthless without an open exhaust, definitely will not make power on street with exhaust

You do not need to flycut the pistons. It has a very nice sound and good torque curve. If you do some research on this site, you'll see the ASA cam makes about 10-15whp more than the hotcam. A lot of people are getting 380whp with basic bolt ons. You only need to get ls6 springs.

Here are the specs between hotcam and ASA cam.

GMPP Hot Cam
218/227 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
112 LSA

GMPP ASA Cam
226/236 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
110 LSA

This is the cam to get if you want a little more power with no maintenance, set it and forget it, don't forget to get a tune.

No you don't need to I ran one for a year no problems. Its a good cam, great torque curve too.

yes bolt in and go with LS6 springs, but I would run a 918 and hardened pushrods to be on the safe side. Dont expect to make 420rw with that cam tho.

I ran some simulations on EA and the ASA has a narrow operating range with maybe 11 HP than the Hot Cam. Th Hot Cam makes more avg HP & TQ than the ASA in the simulation from 2000 to 6500.

This is the internet, there will never be a clear cut answer to "this is the best cam". If it's a daily driver, the 110 LSA will probably be to much (again one person's perception of drivable is different then anothers). Prioritize what you are looking for out of a cam:

1) Able to pass emissions
2) Only changing valve springs one time ever (at initial install)
3) Cost
4) Lope/Street manners (roughness of idle)
5) Lots of low end torque
6) Lots of high end horsepower
7) Running low times at the track

Not bashing what so ever. With that said are those the same engineers that put the 10 bolt in our cars .

i have this cam on my motor. i have ls2 heads, asa cam, ls6 manifold, ported tb, longtubes and the other standard bolt-ons. it makes a great torque curve, but only 370 hp at the wheels. it has great low end but top end could be better. but overall is a good cam.

That makes it sound like a good, fun street cam.

Youre thinking of the Grand Cup cam. The specs are 239 251 .570" lift with 106 lsa. That cam wont fit and would be a pita for a daily driver.
