Default What would cause a lifter to do this (pic inside)

well from my original thread
https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/558113-tapping-driver-side-valve-cover.html

I pulled the head to find this. I'm pondering what would cause this?
its an untouched LS6 with 40k. unfortunately(sorta) the lifter damaged the cam also.

The lifter turned in the bore. Happened to one of mine in my LS1 powered sandrail. I replaced it along with a new guide and a LS6/Z06 cam.

HEAD GASKET(Pass) 12558809
HEAD GASKET(Driver) 12558809
HEAD BOLT KIT(1 side) 12498545
CRANK BOLT 12557840
LS6 Z06 CAM 12565308
LIFTER 17122490
GUIDE 12551162
CRANK SEAL 2561244

Less than $400 from my local dealer. And yes that is the correct parts #s for the head gaskets. I only needed the passenger side.

To replace the cam, get two 5/16"x36" wooden dowels. Check the "How to" sections on this site. You can use the stock pushrods with the Z06 cam and a tune is beneficial, but not needed.

What is the number stamped on the lifter retainer that the lifter came out of? There were some bad ones, and the stamp was "10" on the bottom. There were a number of posts on this a few years back, I think it was around 01/02 that the issue came up. Put in new retainers.

Honestly if one lifter did that I would go ahead and replace all lifters and guides. Just to be safe.

Thats not a turned lifter. Thats simply spalling. That can be caused by a bad cam with an irregular surface, improper heat treat on the rollers, or oil starvation. Ive had this happen to my lifters twice already (2 sets) due to a bad cam that came from a bad batch a few years ago. Ive since replaced the cam and lifters and been happy since. To repeat, this is not a turned lifter as there would be no roller left, and the cam would be ground down to nothing.

Here's what happened to my spalled lifters: http://www.web-srv.com/~tony/picture...rs/page_01.htm

Id never use wooden dowels...

I like metal ones. Sometimes these things are a bitch to get in and you have to really wiggle them...If you wiggle too much you take a huge risk of breaking some wood off in your motor...How are you going to fish that out?

I've never had a problem with the wooden dowels, however, if I had access to metal ones I would sure use them instead.

Actualy one time one of the dowels was not very straight nor the indicated size. I just ground down part of it and then it slid right in.

More info on the setup? Were you using an aftermarket cam? Wasn't there a batch of cams from Futral Motorsports that would chew up the lifters just like that?

He said it was a stock ls6 longblock. I didnt want to drag FMS's name through the mud, but yes, youre correct that they had a bad batch of cams that tore up a bunch of top ends in our motors. Allan made good and replaced the cam for me, although the lifters I paid for. Theyre cheap enough through summit though.
