Default HC installation is done.

AFR 205's milled 0.024"
0.040" Cometic gasket
224/228 XE-R cam on 114+1
7.350" chromoly pushrods
Comp OEM lifters
Ported LS6 oil pump
LS2 timing set
SLP under-drive crank pulley
Poly motor mounts
New iridium NGK 55's

The car fired up and was pretty quiet from the get go, I got 60 psi oil pressure right away. (I ran the starter without spark and fuel, to prime the oiling system.) I had to nurse it a while until it would hold idle, then it settled at 750 rpm. It has a little lope to it at that engine speed, it sounds nice. I've only put it through three heating cycles and drive-ability seems to be improving after each cycle.

But it certainly needs some tuning. So far, once the car warms up it has a harder time holding an idle than when it's cold, and when I get into it a little it bucks and the check engine light comes on momentarily. Hopefully the PCM learns some more so I can feel better about driving it 40 miles for the tune.

It'll be dyno and drive tuned by Slowhawk at Dez Racing, that's the plan anyway.

Yep, I did it all by myself. Probably the scariest part was dealing with the crank pulley.

Looks like you followed Tony's recipe. Should make very good power, but don't be too disappointed if your dyno numbers are not too high. Don's dyno is known to be a little stingy, but your track times will be stellar after he tunes it (he's the man).

It's a press fit and I've seen so many posts where people strip the crank threads. I could not get the pulley on far enough to use the old bolt to force the pulley on. Once I got a longer bolt, it wasn't bad.

Yep, I sure did. And I've learned enough on here to know not to worry about dyno numbers. I should expect trap speeds of, what, 115-120 mph?

I would expect you'd be at or above 120mph, depending on the density altitude.

Awesome, thats my setup on my Vette. You will love the power and pull this thing will have. The heads match the cam profile.

Oh and your right about not chasing dyno numbers...I dynoed 416rwhp and heres a list of kills i have:

93 Rx-7 (425rwhp)
Lambo Gallardo (stock 500bhp)
2001 Vette (H/C 443rwhp)
Acura RS-X (custom turbo@ 16psi) owner insisted i sprayed him...lol

You should finish it off with a set of 3.73 gears....car will be just insane after that. It willput you in the powerband alot faster

PS- how about a mail order tune to get you to DEZ racing. that way you wont foul up plugs and what not.

Finishing up a "big job" like that is always great....time to raise a few brews!! i just finished swapping my old thunder cam for a new custom Comp Cam earlier! it's great thinking about how much $$ you saved doing it yourself and the knowledge you pick up! congrats!

yea dyno #'s aren't what's important, my buddy who does my tuning has a pretty Stingy Dyno too, and every car he tunes runs great times!

I took it to work today and it's running a little better. It seems like the PCM is doing some learning and after each cycle it runs a little better. I think it'll be OK to drive to the shop but a mail order tune is something to think about.

Other than the warm idle issue, the car, even without a tune, seems to run just like stock below 2500 rpm. No drive-ability issues that I can notice, maybe it' slightly boggy right off idle. (Perhaps a little gear is called for. But I should probably install a stronger clutch next.)

I almost forgot to mention, I'm not gettting any SES codes. I can't believe that ****, they must be coming.

On the way home I rolled into the throttle, just up to 4k rpm, and it starting pulling pretty hard, part throttle mind you. I can tell this thing is going to scream.

c5_ls1_6spd, I've seen guys in the 11's with similar combos. After it's tuned I'll get to the track and see what it'll do. I don't expect 11's because I won't be launching hard. (Breaking at the track is not an option, it's a long ride home (100mi) and a big tow bill lol.) I will, however, be looking for a 120 mph or higher trap speeds.

eamador11, you've made some nice kills with that! Did Don at Dez tune yours? Any track times yet?

Thanks, no ECS tuned my car. 12.9 afr..thats where you want to be for n/a setups. SLowhawk is great from what I hear from the Boston area, so your in good hands.

I ran it one time, 12.72@116mph on 19" street tires. I suck at the track But get me on the street and its on!

I had it tuned yesterday! The car runs great and it pulls like a banchy. I love it! Hopefully I'll make it to the drag strip in the coming weeks.

It did 427 rwhp and 397 rwtq on a Dynojet. Not bad if you're into numbers, especially considering there are a few little mods left to do.

On a bit of a downer, my Bosch Corvette rear O2 sensors were switching pretty slow, and after putting some miles on the car it did set insufficient switching codes for both banks, but it also had these codes before the HC installation so I'm not surprised. I'm going to replace them under warranty from Autozone and see what happens.

From there, I'll be chipping away at the small stuff. Next will be an electric water pump and a ported TB, or a clutch lol.

Thanks to local tuning guru, Don at Dez Racing, aka Slowhawk. We, in our area, should consider ourselves fortunate to have a guy so knowledgeable and down to earth.

Awesome...great job! post up the dyno sheet! got any vids of the dyno runs? i would do ported TB. its not much of gains but the throttle response is amazing! Makes it alot more fun to drive.

you have a street killer. Line up with some bigger cam guys; I bet you surprise them.

The car did very good for the mods done.It was hard enough to cool it down to 185 degree's inbetween runs since it still had a stock T-stat in there With a 90mm intake,EWP,cutout ect this would put down 455-465rwhp on my dyno. Not bad for this crappy ethenol gas we are stuck with up here

Sonds like a great setup and congrats on doing it yourself.

Curious - did you do the cometics dry or with copper spray?

Thanks fellas!

I'm far from done modding the car. Heck, I'm not sure what I enjoy more, working on it or driving it.

I forgot to bring the camera. But like most dyno runs, it was very loud and the car revved like a **** .

Don, thanks for heading back to the shop on a holiday to do my tune. Next time I bring it down for tuning I will have a 160 degree stat, maybe even a EWP, I promise.

DaddySS, the HG was installed dry. As far as the prep goes, I'm fortunate to have a 2002 which uses MLS HG's, so the block was clean as a whistle without much effort.

I'll post the graph tomorrow night.
