Default Will an air leak getting around the air filter damage my engine?

I recently discovered while cleaning my K&N filter that there was about a 5mm gap on top of the airlid (evidently there was no seal conecting to the tube that goes to the throttle). The screen inside the tube had some small feathers and other pieces of debre so i know air was getting through. My car has about 48k on it, what do you think this has done to my engine? It has been regulary maintained.

no easy way to tell, but if its not burning oil and still runs fine you should be in good shape.. the guy who had my car before me was an idiot- and my slp intake wasnt on even half right, there was a big gapping hole because it wasnt on right and had no seal- and i saw this before i bought the car, almost made me not buy it. i guess no dirt got in though, because i just took off my heads and my bore's look great at 70k.

Such a leak can throw lean codes, ask me how I know...

Seal it up, she'll run better.

But was your leak before or after the MAF?

I did nothing more to it than taking out and cleaning the filter. Also the ruber tubing that connects to the top of the airlid was all messed up. Either the previous owner of the car thought it would be fun to break the seals and otherwise try to pull the whole assembly apart or this thing was made by a bunch of drunks in a factory in mexico. From the nature of the defects I suspect poor worksmanship. No wonder GM is going out of business.

anyway, thanks for all your input! I have beat a buttload of mustang GT's and one '98 cobra (i can't even get rice to challange) so the car is definetely running well.
