Default Installing ARP head studs, need a few tips

Taking my ARP head studs out of one motor and installing them in a fresh motor. I called ARP regarding lubrication since I don't have their moly lube handy and they said it is fine to use SAE 30 motor oil, the effect and torque values required will be the same.

I tried searching and search is either down or slow... so could someone point me to a thread/url with the proper install procedure? I do have the service manual so I know how factory bolts should be torqued and in what order but I do not know if there is a special procedure required here.

I would imagine the torque values for the stud itself are probably different than the torque values for the nut. Factory service manual calls for two passes of different levels of torque for bolts, does this have to be done to the studs when going in to the block? I would definitely do it for the nuts since that seems like it can only help gasket seal.

Thanks for any pointers.

I was told the studs themselves should go in dry... and only hand tight. Then the heads are torqued down in 3 steps for the large nuts, 25/55/75ft.lbs. if I remember correctly. Let it sit overnight (at least) and check/re-torque all nuts. This was with the ARP moly lube though...not sure about 30w specs?

Awesome!! Thanks Black Z28. This is a fresh motor and I think the bolt holes are clean/clear. I'll use an old bolt nicked up as a chaser if necessary. Otherwise that sounds like a very straightforward install procedure.

Thanks again!

Yep, only hand tight! Theoretically you just need to have all the threads of the stud fully engaged for proper function. Once fully seated and hand tight they aren't going anywhere....

Are there more people out there that can confirm the heads slip on/off easily with head studs and the motor in the car?

Thanks.

Thanks Black Z/28. That answered my question well. And let me just add, that's a hot h/c package you have for such a small intake lobe. 395 on a mustang dyno is nothing to sneeze at!

Thanks. I thought the numbers were pretty good for that 'puny' cam. I'll give credit to the heads (and the additional work I did on them before installing them).
