Profiles are extremely radical, massive seat pressure, rapid ramps, very hard on valvetrain vs hydraulic roller.

ramp rates..... lightweight valvetrain along with massive seat and open pressures are welcomed.

Do they call it solid because it is generally used with a dry sump oil system, and hydraulics are typically used with wet sump?

Solid rollers also require regular valve lash adjustments.

A solid roller can go in a 346.

It uses solid lifters, not hydraulic lifters that can adjust play. You use adjustable rocker arms to adjust play.

A solid lifter is like sticking a brick in between your pushrod and cam. There will be no spring or oil to help dampen when the cam opens the valve, unlike in a hydraulic lifter.

Solid roller allows you to run just about whatever spring pressure you want with out having to worry about over coming the lifter like you do with a hydraulic roller. This allows you to run more aggresive cam profiles and turn them considerably faster. They will require an adjustable valvetrain and periodic maintenance (valve adjustments). The main reason for their lack of popularity is that (as mentioned before) they are rarely required for the LS1's and most people do not like having to adjust valves on a semi regular basis.
