Default need a good *basic* 98 scanner and code clearer

My check engine light is on and I am going to need a scanner for my car. Not sure if I should go as cheap as possible, get rid of the car and then get a diablo scanner next round, or, get something halfway decent that can read all ODBII's, including sensors, and then also buy a diablo(or something like that) later? One thing I do know is that I am not ready to spend $440 on something I cant use yet, lol. I am also not in the mood to deal with this limited computer/car so I am gonna sell it. In the mean time, I know I will need a basic scanner that can read a 98 computer and clear it. What out there is cheap, and can read my computer with P codes? My next car will be a 99+

Problem is that I have a feeling, as much of a basket case this thing is turning out to be, that this car is going to keep throwing codes for awhile and I dont want to have to drive to autozone (10 miles away) everytime it does it.

This one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OBDII...33037435QQrdZ1 looks nice and cheap, but, I wonder if it can read P codes and erase the "stored" codes?

That's kind of cheap for a scanner. Autozone carries a few different ones that start around $70. Or, you can even rent one from Autozone for free, you only pay tax which is like $10 or so, and you can keep it for long as you want. Take it back and they give you your money back.

I was thinking...... Can the Diablo type at least "read" a 98 and just reset the SES light? I would not nead to upload anything, I would just need to read it.

Hmmmm, really? i will check autozone out in the morning and give them a call, thanks.

Yeah, you pay for the scanner which is like $170, plus tax, and you take home a scanner. You can keep it as long as you want, and when you bring it back you get your $170 back, without the tax. I'm not sure if it's $170, but it's close.

The auto xray is really good. I got mine from Kragen in 99 and have had it updated through the years. Does all OB 2,3 from 96-current
