Default whats the difference between an LQ4 and LQ9?

hey everyone, before you start getting mad at me for not using the search feature, i did. what i gather is that the LQ4 is to the LS1 as the LQ9 is to the LS6? is that right? they are the same bottom ends right? also, would all the parts that work with an LS1 be interchangable with these engines? i am talking about top end. So basically an LQ9 is just an LQ4 with different heads, cam, intake? Please clarify. Thanks!

yes, pistons are different which made compression ratio different. also, LQ9 used heavy duty rods and different heads.

some truck cranks were different with a wider rear seal surface, so not all the parts are interchangeable

but basically all the mods made for an LS1 can be used in an LQ4 or LQ9? for example, i heard that for the TREX cam you need to flycut pistons. would that be necessary on the LQ4 or 9?

i mean to say, do all the rules that apply to LS1s apply to these engines too? such as dimensions and everything. if i buy parts for the car that im looking to get, which has a 6.0 in it, would i need to buy parts for an LS1 since its in an Fbody, or for a truck, since its a truck motor...

Heads were the same 317's for both engines.

Car intakes work on the truck 6.0's as well as all bolt-ons. The dish pistons will give you a little more room for lift at the expense of compression.\

The pistons and rods are different as the LQ4 has 9.4:1 CR and the LQ9 has a 10.0:1 Static CR. The LQ9 was used in the Denali, Silverado SS and the Escalade. The LQ4 was used in everything else. Both have cranks with a 3.622" stroke, but the counterweights are set up to match the rotating/reciprocating mass of the piston/rod assemblies of the respective engine. Except for the rotating assemblies, they are the same engine. All other parts are interchangeable. They both have the same basic cast iron crank.

Hope this helps.

sorry dude, do more research. LQ9s in escalades 2001+ have the same head as a 317 except that it was die cast (instead of sand cast) and casting number is 035

You seem to be the only one thinking that the LQ9 got different heads. Search the post above yours.

LQ9 is like a H.O. version of the LQ4 with bumped up compression due to the flat top pistons. As mentioned, the cranks were different pre-02, but 02+ are interchangable with LS1's.

LQ9 motors did use the 035 casting. But 035 and 317 heads are basically the same.

Default Thread revived.

Didn't want to start a new thread...

I picked up what was supposedly a LQ4/4L65E 4x4 trans out of a '06 Silverado 2500. Well I read a thread somewhere where someone stated that if it was a 4L60/65E (three bolts in the converter which it has) and not a 4L80E (would have 6 bolts in the converter), that it was from a VMax truck and that the engine would be a LQ9 and not a LQ4. AFAIK, the only differences is the pistons, but without having the heads off, is there any well to tell which one I have? Engine has 317 alum heads on it.
