I am getting ready to get my parts together for a cam install in my 99 LS1. I'm curious as to what all parts that I will need for the install. I'm on a very tight budget. I'm going to be using 918 springs. Hopefully I can use the stock retainers/locks. I'm going to be going with the TSP 228R cam and hardened rods. Can anyone be very specific as to what is needed so I can pick it all up and never have to run to the store again? Your help is greatly appreciated!!

 

a lot of the time most places offer a cam kit that comes with everything you need for install I got mine through thunder racing.

 

new gaskets (water pump, timing cover)
oil pump
timing chain
crank bolt

 

Ok I just purchased the cam install kit from TR. So I will need a new timing chain and oil pump for sure? If so where are those the cheapest and do I just need stock replacements? Can I get away with using the stock retainers/locks/seats/etc?

 

a few specific tools, are optional but very helpful, goto Ls1howto.com they have a very good right up on the swap, aswell as parts and tools needed.

 

i would since you have a 99. LS2 chains are $30. not sure how much ls6 pumps are. wouldn't hurt to get a ported pump. they run around $130.

 

im pretty sure the kit will come with new seals and retainers as for locks you can use your stock ones. you are going to want a good valve spring compressor to make the job easier on yourself. you can just get a ls2 timing chain if you are on a tight budget and although its not really needed but highly recommended to get a ported oil pump. are you doing the job yourself?

 

just be ready for suprises

 

Haven't decided if I'm doing it myself or not but if I'm not I need to have all the supplies for the install together and had a shop quote me $500 for the install.

 

Where can I find the LS2 chain and it will be strong enough? I just dont see why I would need to spend $160 on a double roller chain in the first place...

I am going to try and get away with using the stock retainers. Where did you get the ls2 timing chain kit? Can you not just use a $30 ls2 chain alone?

 

I got the rollmaster timing set, and if you just buy the PRC gold springs you can get dual springs, TI retainers, and locks for like 250ish

 

well i bought a kit from MTI that came with pretty much all the internal valvetrain upgrades....but i got the ls6 ported oil pump and timing chain kit from texas speed. a friend of mine got just the timing chain and said he woulda been better off just buying the kit since its not that much more. got the kit for 109 shipped

Thanks for all the help guys. Decided to just buy the LS2 chain alone and keep the stock retainers. Now I'm just trying to find the best deal on a TSP228R cam and some rods.
