Default Help me decide on a cam...

I going to be doing a head/cam swap in the very near future. I just cannot decide on what cam to go with!! I think I've got it narrowed down and then I read more stuff, and I change my mind again. I will have a fast 90/90 setup and long tube headers as well. I will be keeping stock gears. M6 3.42. Car is a corvette FRC so it is light. Car is not daily driven. I dont mind shelling out money for a really good set of heads. Here are my goals
- ~450rwhp+
- Good midrange power, 400+lb's+of TQ, I dont want to have to rev over 7k
- Lopey idle is fine
- acceptable piston to valve clearence, I don't want to have to flycut

I suggest looking at the TSP 233/239 cam as well. I've been looking at getting this cam and have been hearing good things about it.

I was reading Patricks thread (torque coming out of my ears). It looks like he has a awesome setup there. I wonder if thunder would grind a cam like that for anyone.

get the T2, but what ever bigger cam you get you need to get some gears in that thing.

My old car was a 02' mustang gt 5speed. One of the better mods was supposed to be gears... So I put in 4.10 gearset. Car ran out of gear at 30,50,85,and 110mph in fourth. 5th gear isnt useable with that tranny. Although a good track gear, I could never hook up with street tires. It sucked running out of gear at 110mph.... No more highway/freeway racing, and I lost 2-3mpg.

I would go with the Torquer 2, I can't say enough about how this cam maintains great streetability even with stock gearing, has an awesome jaw-dropping lope and has a great power curve. I have a graph that I can post up if you guys haven't already seen a Torquer 2 graph. In a vette, this is definitly the cam I would go with when wanting to maintain great street manners but getting the full benefit of a cam.

Let me know if you guys want to see the graph and I'll post it up!

I have a friend with a 2000 camaro with 450 rwhp & 400rwtq with a 228/230 cam. Car also has a 9" with 4.10 gears.

Is any flycutting needed for a Torquer V2 cam, teminator 200cc and cosmetic gaskets? I think I have seen the graph you are referring to. 433 whp and 400lbs+ of TQ? Go ahead and post it I would like to see the power curve.

NO flycuting needed.
The TQ 2 IMO is a good cam but dosen't live up to it Torquer name.
Does make some impressive HP numbers though. Can't go wrong with any of the cams on your list.

like JZ said I don't have great TQ numbers, but it is still a decent cam. You won't be mad with any of those cams.

To meet your goals I'd suggest a G5X3 on a 112 LSA. Great mid-range and top end. Works well with stock gears, especially in a light car such as yours. Makes great torque and SERIOUS hp. If you're looking to go heads, regardless of the cam its always a good idea to fly cut for safety/little insurance.

Without flycutting and no compromise in the low end torque, you will need to run the optimum DCR. The torquer 2 recommended above does not fit with heads milled and thinner gaskets needed to get a 8.7 dcr. You will do better through the power band with a 228/232 xer on a 112 or 114 with an advance that gets you to the dcr, you need or milling/thinner gaskets.

If you want 350-400 RWTQ at 3000rpm then get a cam that fits with 8.7-8.8 dcr. If max peak HP is all that impresses you then get the torquer 2.

I ahve this cam in the car...un tuned it nearly impossible to drive, but its gettign tuned tomorrow. Once its moving it makes excellent power, and sound BADASS.
