Emergency!!! Rounded off Rock Stud - Help

Emergency!!! Rounded off Rock Stud - Help I am helping a forum member with a cam swap. The stud on of of the rockers for the #7 Cylinder is stripped. The threads are not stripped in the head. The top of the stud that takes an 8mm socket is rounded off. It was rounded off before we even tried taking it out. Came that way I guess. Any ideas on how to get the stud out? Of course it was the last we needed to remove.
The material is hardened. We tried to get a 7.5mm socket on it. No luck.

if you have access to a grinder you can try to square off opposite sides and then try to get it with vice grips. If you have a welder weld a bolt or nut to the top of the stud. Other than that you can try to hammer on a junk socket to get it wedged on, I'd just be careful with that as you don't want to mess up the threads in the head.

I have that kit and it work great. Just tap it on with a hammer to get it to bite the bolt and then turn it with a socket. Mine works evertime I have needed it.

Use the 5/16 socket for all of those bolts, it works great. I had three round with the 8mm, switched to the 5/16 and no problems.

Those bolts are often on there real tight, mine broke my snap-on 8mm 6 point socket, and I had to get an 8mm impact socket, so I don't think vice grips will work. Try banging a 5/16 on there or use a tool like the sears tool and give the top of the bolts a couple of good sharp raps with a hammer and short extension to break the threads loose a bit before you try to take them off.

I also had to use that Sears kit on one of my bolts, worked great. While I was there I also picked up and impact socket to replace the two regular one's I cracked. Glad you got it taken care of.
Get several 5/16" 12 point sockets from sears and hammer them on there. You will break a few so having a couple extra is nice!
Also make sure that the lifter is on the base circle of the cam for the rocker bolt you're trying to loosen.

My 5/16 socket was too big. Anyways we got it off with a back-out tool from Sears. That worked great. The bolt must have been slightly off spec from the other ones. My Craftsman 8mm socket worked just fine on the other 15 bolts. When we got the stuck one off we notice the bolt was only very slightly rounded. I borrowed a different 8mm socket from a next door and it worked on all the bolts. Just strange as I had never run into that before. Guess I need a few different sets of sockets just to be safe.
We were able to get all the bolts torqued properly and we were able to finish up. I am exhausted!

I'd get a 12 point 5/16 socket and hammer it on there (5/16 is slightly smaller than 8mm) and see if you can bust it loose that way.
