Default Help a cam newbie out!

Ok guys help a newbie out

Is there such thing is a mean sounding cam, that it will work properly with stock heads, and fit for daily driving? As you can see from my sig, i have an 01 Camaro SS.

I know this is a longshot.. but i figured i would ask my newbie question anyways.

Also, if there is such a thing, what type of HP gains would i be looking at from it, my car is pretty much stock right now besides the new lid, and free ram air mod, ported TB. But i have PaceSetter LTs and a borla setup in the mail that will be installed soon.

You will need gears as well and of course tuning.

Cams> MS3,MS4, G5X3,G5X4, T-REX,TR230,TV2,TV3 etc.........

You can't just put a cam in either. You're gonna need a brand new valvetrain to handle the new cam. I had all bolt ons, 3.73s, and a stall converter before I put my cam in. TSP 233/239 cam gave me 50 rwhp. And it sounds mean. If you have myspace you can check my video out at
www.myspace.com/tjswanson just click on videos and you'll see my car on the dyno.

I have a 99 LS1. And I am curious on what type of cam i can install with out changing the valve train. I was thinkign about getting a set of heads but I have 64,000 miles on it, and I dont want to put new compresion on old bearing and I am going to be building a motor for it any ways. I just want a little hp gain and add some NOS. Just to make me happy while I build the other motor.

I really think the Ms3 is a great all around cam. It also works very well on nitrous. You can also go with something bigger, like the TRex and Ms4... It looks like you're going in the right direction with supporting mods, but you might want to also upgrade your intake.

Its on my todue list. I need to get Longtube headers. I dont know if I should get an LS6 intake or an LSX intake. Already ported my throttle body, did the rame air intake mod. I have a lid. So It is possible to put an aftermarket cam with a bone stock valve train.

Yes, if you stick with a really small cam.

I see, but it is possible to put in a nice cam with the stock heads..

So after i install my headers, borla setup, and 3.73 gears, with a good tune and an aftermarket valve train, i will be able to put in a decent cam. Which valve train would you recommend buying?

The thing is.. good heads are a load of money.. that i don't have right now, all the other things required are within my price range.

i gotta soundclip of my cam in my sig. as far as the valvetrain go with comp 918's w/titanium retainers if your cam is under 600 lift and go with some type of dual spring(with retainers, seats and seals), i went with the prc's, if your cam has over 600 lift.

What is expensive to you? Patriot will sell you a set of CNC'ed 243 casting head for like 1195 fully assembled, and they claim these will add 40HP, not to mention you will need valve springs anyways and these already come with a 250springs kit on them.

If you dont want heads then yeah there are still cams out there that will sound "mean" with heads done and they will still make power to. Just look at list in the first post my predator, all of those cams are very popular, especially for cam only applications.

You're still looking at close to a 1000 $ for a cam swap (a little more with a tune).

I have a tsp 233/239, sounds mean as hell, and drives fairly well with a tune. I drive it 600+ miles a week withou any probs and 20mpg.

if I were to get a cam, I would need to change pushrods, rocker arms, How about the valves?? Or should I just rebuild the whole head while I am at it??

You'll just need pushrods and valvesprings. I'd recommend the Patriot Gold valve springs if you're going to use a pretty wild cam. They are only $255 shipped from BYUNSPEED.

If you're going to go with a milder cam (under .600 lift), go with the Comp 918 beehive springs.

How wild of a setup are you looking for? Want more top-end pull or low-end pull? Your car should already have an LS6 intake on it since its an '01. There are plenty of people making 400-450rwhp on an LS6 intake. I'm one of them, and I have a pretty small-duration cam (granted I do have heads though). I'll be stepping up to a ported Fast 90 by springtime though.

I have a Torquer V.2 cam and it sounds mean as hell but i also have it on a 110lsa. The lower your LSA the meaner your cam will sound. But I would highly suggest you upgrader your TC, then get a LS6 intake, and gears before you put in a cam. I went the route of cam first and it took a good bit of tuning to make it driveable on the street without the upgraded TC at least.
