Default difference in older ls1's??

i got a 98 ls1 car with flood damage and was going to put basically a stock rebuild on the engine and put it in my 69 camaro(leaving it fuel inj) but i was hearing that the older heads were not very good. what is the diff? i am not trying to build a race car at all, just a cruiser. also any pics or advice on the change over to th e 69 chassis would be nice as well..............

I dont know much about puting in a 69 but i do know that the valve cover bolts on a 98 are perimiter bolt style vs. all the 99 and up stuff being center bolt style.

If you aren't building the crap out of it, you'll never notice the difference. It's just a matter of the valve covers. Not an issue.

The '98's (806 castings) were a little different. The '98 valves alone don't flow what the later years flow, and the runners are sand cast. The latter years were semi-permanent mold casts. The SPM heads had more accurate ports and had a better surface finish. You're maybe looking at a 10hp MAX difference between the heads. The '98 cars dyno'd lower, but they had more restrictive exhaust manifolds and intakes that didn't flow what the latter years did.

You hear lots of bad things about the 98's but there are plenty of fast 98's out there so....I wouldn't worry about it at all. Proof is right here....https://ls1tech.com/forums/drag-racing-results/444688-quickest-stock-internals-list-11-80-bump.html

To be honest....the biggest reason I would like a 99+ is that because of the perimeter bolts, the coil packs are all seperate. It makes life a little easier when you are working on it to just pop off the whole rack of coils at once. On a 69 I don't think you will have any problem with "room to work".
