Default Heads info needed

I just picked up a set of 853 heads hand ported with stock valves and 918 springs. Im going to run these with a 224/224 .564 112 cam or a 224/228 .563 112 cam. I want to know how much to mill these heads to get me close to a 10:9:1 compression using new stock head gaskets? Also if i mill these to get this compression what length pushrods do i need? I havent bought the gaskets so im open to sugestions. thanks

what is your reason for using a stock sized head gasket? Using a thinner one from Cometic or whichever company you prefer will get you a better quench area and you'll have to cut the heads less which is good if you ever want to re sell them. Just my $.02
Good Luck

If you use a cometic part #C5788-040, mill the heads approx. .018", you should end up with a compression of approx. 10.9-11.0.

Make sure the 853's don't have the infamous notch in them (mine do) if so you'll need to run composite gaskets to seal them.

Also how much do i mill these using stock gaskets #12498543 to get arround a 11:0 compression? (The heads are not a big deal, so resale is not a concern) thanks

The info below was originally posted by SDPC (can't find the post now) but it tells you all you would want to know about 'the notch'.

BTW, my 853 heads from a 99 had the notch...and guess what..they leaked when I used MLS gaskets on them. Enjoy.

Ok, yes mine have the notch you are talking about. If i just get some GM gaskets #12498543 this is the gaskets for the earlier year ls1's should work to seal that notch up right? What gaskets did you end up using then? thanks

The earlier head gaskets should have different part numbers for right/left side. They are composite gaskets, as apposed to MLS ones, also.

I ended up putting 317 (6.0L) heads on mine and used the 6.0L MLS gasket. Works great, no complaints.

The reason im asking is i went to the dealership and they told me that i need part # GM part number 12498543. They said it comes in a set of two. They said this is the gaskets needed for years 1997-1999, the 2000-200+ use #GMPN 12498544. So should i just buy the first set, assuming that they are two different gaskets that i will need? thanks

Sounds like it's a kit. It should work, provided it's the composite gasket. Really easy to tell the difference.
