Default ms3/ install just a cam? please help

Hey everybody Im kinda new here and need a little help, im thinking about putting a cam in my car (98 z m6) and I was reading up on texas speed cams. I heard one car with that magic stick 3 cam and it sounded awesome. I was wondering everyones opinion on it? I was also wondering what the lift specs on the stock ls1 heads are? Could I use the stock heads w/o modification with that cam or would I have one hell of a problem..? lol I am also thinking about just going with the matched head/cam kit they have for that cam. But I really dont want to spend 2k right now. And I read that just installing that cam on a stock ls1 motor, it increases 80 hp. And 60rwhp, now I dont know how much I believe that but it seems like that would be one hell of a bargain for around $400. The thing that is throwing me off though is that it says on their website it adds "80hp to a stock ls1." So that would also lead me to believe that you can install this cam with the stock heads? lol Sorry if this is a pain in anybody's ***. lol

btw I converted from my lt1 project (built that up and had fun with it) for a daily driver and I love my ls1 so much, Im like everyone else... you get the car, its awesome, then you get use to it and then,I WANT MORE POWER!!! lol

MY GIRLFRIEND SAYS I HAVE A SICKNESS WITH BUYING CAR PARTS, But I just love Camaros!!! lol

But thanks everybody
-Andrew

Its a great cam and it has pretty good street manners. It will clear stock heads with no problem. Dont forget to get a LS6 oil pump as well as the stuff the guy above listed.

That start up was before a tune but after the tune it didnt sound any different. I still average around 18mpg around the city and around 25mpg on the highway so its not too bad... course that is with me keeping my foot out of the gas which is pretty rare...haha

The cam kit is about $650 with dual valve springs, cam, pushrods, retainers. The ls2 timing chain is around $60, ls6 oil pump is around $100. All your gaskets and fluids total to about $150... so plan on spending about $1000 total. Now it doesnt seem like such a bargain anymore for 60-80hp..haha. If you get it then youll love it though.

I pmed u back... you can get your ls2 timing chain and all your gaskets from a chevy dealership... and sometimes u can find good deals on ls6 oil pumps on ebay or in the forsale section on here. But if you cant find anything then just get the cam kit and pump from tsp... at least then it will save u on some shipping.

What modifications have you done to your car? If you have don't have headers plan on getting them either before or shortly after. I have a MS4 and I gained 40hp to the wheels with stock manifolds, ORY and a Borlamouth, but I can see in my hptuner logs that the car is choking in its own exhaust. I'm planning to put some 1 7/8 headers this winter God willing. That should unlock a lot of power that is currently been left in the table.

yea i have mid lengths on there. Im wondering how possible it is to break into the 11's (I.E. 11.99) lol with the ms3. Low 12's is definately cool though too. personal best is 13.5 on a basically stock setup. so anything mid 12's and lower is a plus. But thanks for the post! Also, what is the difference between ms3 and ms4?

I have pulled 11.80s with the MS3 and stock heads. This was with 28" slicks too. With a smaller tire it probably would have went 11.60s. Then I srayed it with a 200 shot and went 10.61 @ 129. The MS3 loves the spray. It is a little lazy on the low end though. Street manners are not for the faint of heart. It sounds mean as hell too.

The MS4 is 239/242, .649"/.609" on a 111 or 112 LSA around 6400rpm peak hp, and uses the new LSK comp cam lobes on the intake side and the XE-R Lobes on the exhaust. It also tends to have a bit better low end than the MS3 and it fits under stock or stage 1 heads without flycutting. Cam is fairly new so Jury is still out on how much better is the performance and longevity over the his proven older sibling the MS3.

The MS3 is 237/242 .603"/.609" on a 112-114 LSA around 6400rpm peak hp, and uses the XE-R Lobes on both the intake and exhaust. Also fits under under stock heads. This cam is proven performer.

Just a not Mid-lengths are probably barely adecuate. Both the MS3 and MS4 are big cams I would say 1 3/4 Long tubes are the minimum. I'm toying with the idea of throwing some midlenghts my local shop had laying around and dynoing the car to see how much of a difference it makes and then doing it again when I get a set of 1 5/7 to see how the cam reacts at each level but not sure yet.

I've always thought of nos as a kinda shady way to get hp. It scares me b/c of the damage it causes. What kinda of jets do you use? I've been told to not go more than 150 but 125 is safer... also that wet shots are a lot more dangerous than a dry shot? lol If somebody wanted to clear all that up, it'd be great. haha but I've just heard a lot of good things about the cam, and once about 8 or 9 months ago, I saw a video on here with somebody's transam that was smoking every car with it. It was a cool vid. And then the words ("MAGIC STICK 3") stuck in my head. lol And I was like... yeah.. thats the one!

-And bjamick I've been told to get a new timing set also (100), Gaskets (150).. lol BOOM There goes my checkbook. haha
Oh well, maybe i'll just start buying it all piece by piece. Im not usually known for going the cheap route anyways I'd rather be safe than sorry (hence the nitrous opinion) lol But yea I know the **** costs money, thats y everybody doesnt do it.
But if you guys could point me in the right direction as to where I could get stuff like (gaskets, the timing set, oilpump) for a great deal I'd very much appreciate it!

Thanks alot guys!
-Andrew

You got that backwards.... wet kit is safer than dry in most cases. And most people run between a 100 and 150 shot.
