Default ls1 in place of v6

im not sure if this is the right place to post this so please forgive me if so.

I currently have a 2001 MMM v6 camaro. Of coarse i want the v8 and i got the v6 at the time because its all that i could afford being a college student. Recently I have been thinking what exactly i want to do with the car, sell it for an ss or z28 or t/a... or drop an ls1 in my current car. I know alot of people think, "why spend the time and effort when you can trade it in for around the same amount of money?" But the way i see it is this, yes its alot of time ordering all the parts, assembling, and installing, but... being a college student i do not have 5k laying around to trade my car in for an ls1 car. Doing this i could also put everything i want on it, cam shaft, headers, exhaust, heads, intake, everything... or i could just buy a used ls1 already assembled. So, instead I could order parts as i come up with the money part by part, plus itll just be fun as hell! I have never build my own engine nor have i installed one but i am taking classes next semester at a local community college for this and I read non stop on what to do and how to do it. I also know that ill need new shocks, springs, PCM, engine, the whole 9 yards... but i think this will be a great fun project to do and learn on. I have a beautiful monterey maroon metallic camaro and i dont think i want to give up a car that rare in color.

Just wanted to see what yalls thoughts are on this issue. thanks!

It is not only the motor you have to change it is pretty much most of the drivetrain.
I've done it on a Gen III and after my experience if I had to do it again, I would just sell the car and buy a V8 one.

The only way i would do it again is for a stripper/drag setup where you have to change everything anyways.

You are gonna end up spending more on your swap than you will on trading in your car and getting an LS1 car. There are always plenty more things that you have to buy once you get into it.

i thought the only difference in the ls1 car and the v6 car, besides the engine, was the suspension. arent the rear ends the same? my car right now is an auto and i do plan on making the switch to standard while i do this.

I know this has been asked alot but its something that id really like to do and its something that sounds like a very good learning experience, not everyone can saw... "i built and installed this engine myself." Even if i go to a junkyard and pick up a fully assembled ls1 engine, I will bore it out, new cam, heads, headers, lifters, rods, intake, pretty much everything.

mellis, if you do not want to listen to advice, why post? Just do it then and learn from YOUR experience.
This has been posted a zillion times.

The swap is not easy, Motor, accessories, radiator, fuel system, sway bars, springs, mounts, PCM and harness etc....
It IS cheaper to just buy a V8 car and to mod that one.

Can it be done? YES
Would it be cheaper? NO

IMO its cheaper to buy a V6 car (or use the one you have) and get another LS1 motor. i never understand why people would go out and buy a 02 Z28 just to replace everything associated with the motor/trans/suspension. just dosent make sense

as for your question, easiest would be to get an LS1 drop out. cheapest would be to get a LQ4 truck motor and built trans.

You will pretty much have to buy everything but the body, wheels, and brakes. If you have lots of money or have some connection to your v6 that you can't get rid of it. That would be the only reasons. Honestly the better choice is the older LS1 purchase and rebuild. You will spend a retarded amount of money on a used motor + all new parts for it, then have to turn around and do all harness and drivetrain.

f- the ls1, if your gonna do a swap then get your moneys worth outta it, your gonna end up spending a lot more than you think then just swapping in a new ls1. Id put more juice in it for your buck, with a nice cam and headers/tune you could easily pull 500 hp outta this

Are you speaking from experience?
And why a 2002?
Let him get a 98 or better 99 (no perimeter VC and PIA pcm of the 98)
and do a rebuilt on that.
Like I've said, I've done V6>V8 swaps and the only street one I did ended up more expensive.
And if you think that you can drive a V8 swap at V6 insurance, YES you can, untill you get in a wreck and the adjustor notices the motor is bigger and then denies the claim (Those 2 extra cylinders are hard to hide ).

unless your going to put like $1000 in driveline parts then i wouldn't those V6 cars are not even close to what the ls1 cars have for stability i would buy a ls1 car you could probly pick one up for around 14,000-16,000

01 ws sick) 01TA full exhaust, slp lid,3.73 gears, trans go shift kit, street tires and running 12.82 all day thats what happens when you do it the right way $1500= 0.70 tenths gain
