Default 5.3 heads.....should I???

Guys, I'm new to all this LSX technology. Did a search for these answers and wasn't satisfied.

I have the oppurtunity to purchase a set of 5.3 heads from a friend who owns a cylinder head shop here in Michigan. He says they are brand new castings that he CNC ported, 58cc, 2.02/1.57 and flow 310. They have all Manley hardware in them. He says he'll sell them to me for $800. Is that a good price and are these pretty good heads? I have a stock LS1 right now, what's the liters on that...is it 5.7 or something? What do the 5.3 heads come off of? Also, what kinda cam could I run with these heads without having to fly cut the pistons and what potential valve cover problems or any other issues do you see if I decide to run with them. I have an LS6 intake I plan to use on this motor.

Help!

I have a set of Absolute Speed CNC ported 5.3l heads on my LS1. They have preformed flawless and the advantage with a 5.3l head, they will raise you compression ratio to around 11.0:1. For $800, I would probibly go for it.

i dont know much about the ls1 but i do know this. your ls1 is a 6.0l and the 5.3 was built off of the 6.0 block so the heads will bolt up fine. i have also head that a stock set of 5.3 heads flow better than a set of 6.0 heads. but that is just what i have heard. not 100% sure

At $800, that is a steal, go for it now.

I ran 5.3 heads for the last 5 years, I made 400.3 RWHp with a 218/218 cam.
I have now just replaced them with Patriot Perf heads.

Yes yes that's a good deal just remember that price is not including the gaskets, bolts, labor(or beer and bloody knuckles), and you might have to change your vavle covers.

I've had 862 casting 5.3L heads for the past 4 years, no problems. I think 58 cc could be a problem, because the CR will be way over 11 to 1. Unmilled the heads are 64cc. Fly cutting also will be a must unless you go with a small cam. I had to fly cut with 64 cc and only a 228/230 cam.

So with 5.3 heads there is less PVC? And the advantage is more compression.

dude, an LS1 is a 5.7 its a totally different animal than a LQ4 6.0. the LS1 was built before the LQ4 and the 5.3 came before the 6.0 so i nor you know what you are talking about.

So the concensus here is that they are a good deal?

I'm looking for around 410/420 rwhp...370/380 rwlbs of torque. This car will be a street car and I would like to not have any idling issues and a killer lopey sound to it. The car is an A4 with 3.73 gears and 26" tall tires. I already have an LS6 intake that I'm going to use and I plan to stick to with the stock injectors and throttle body.

If I decided to go with the heads, what do you recommend of the following......

1.) Camshaft (without having to flycut the pistons).
2.) Stall Speed of torque convertor.

Thanks for any help you can provide. This is going to really help me out.
