I just can't see warming up a car for 10 minutes every time you drive it, that's just plain nuts. No way OEM's or even performance products are designed for >10 minute warm up per trip.

LOL im with you... it takes me 15-20 mins to get to work.. i just let it idle for 30 seconds, drive off and quick shift 1-2-3 through the neighborhood and keep it around 1800 RPM's.

Because you lose .050 preload when you move from a stock 1.550" base circle to an aftermarket 1.450. You net a loss of .030 preload.

a guy around here had that same problem breaking the springs. installed the cam a tooth off and his cam (about your size) dinged up the pistons a little and broke a couple of springs

I broke a 918 about 2 months ago. It completely destroyed my engine. I ALWAYS let my car come to operating temp before driving, and the springs only had about 10k on them.

The spring broke right where you describe, too.

yeah something is not right with your setup.I have the same exact cam and i am running PPgolds and 7.4 pushrods because my heads are milled and i am using a cometic. .045 gaskets..You should be using 7.425: pushrods if your heads are unmilled...Something is wrong with your setup.

Back to the pushrod argument. Not all aftermarket cams have a smaller base circle. The only way to be sure what it is is to measure it. With that said, 7.425" pushrods on a stock sized base circle could break valve springs.

I measured the seat height and it measured 1.631. I wasn't using the correct tool to measure so does that even sound right at all?

somebody was saying that i may have it a tooth off on timing, well I'm sure it is right because i checked several times to make sure it was right. Also if it was off one tooth wouln't it not run very good?

do you have the original retainers to compare with the ones used? Maybe the retainers you used are too thick and put too much preload on the springs

Where did you get the springs? Where are the blue stripes that should be on the 918s?

the longer pushrods and thicker retainers could have done it.

918's installed height is 1.800... I doubt you measured it accurately though.

majority of engine wear occurs during the cold start I let mine warm up for at least 10 min espically when its cold outside would you rather loose a few mpg per tank or buy a new motor when it blows under 100K?

MY buddy used to think the same as you and his WS6 died at 52K my 98Z is still alive and perfectly well after more abuse including nitrous then any car should take and i Always let it warm up now it has 146K running strong!

As for those springs I think ur best bet is to call the comp help lie see if they have ever had this happen before and see what they recommend for pushrod size those guys really seem to know there stuff.
