A lot of these guys have over 8k invested in motor alone.. with an 8k motor you'll likely end up needing a new tranny sometime soon lol, so wait till you have the cash to do the mods or you will end up in bad debt.

Yea, I guess I follow the old saying, "You can go as fast as your wallet will let you". I just save up until I can get what I need. No credit for go fast stuff (just personal preference I guess). It seems easier for me because I spend 0 money on the car in the winter, just $80 for storage insurance, so the money seems to add up in the winter months, then spring comes and it's all gone?

Paid cash for a FRC vette, paid cash for about 8K in mods and then spun a rod bearing....so I put a 402 and install on a cc. Got about 5K in debt right now on this damn thing. It will be fun though.

The Z is not my only car though, I have a 05 tc that eats up the majority of my money because of the payments and insurance.

My advice is don't mod a car that you don't have the money to mod outright. Think of your credit card as something to use in emergencies such as if the car breaks and it's your daily driver and you can't afford to fix it outright...think of mods as something you might have to wait a few weeks or months to be able to afford, but you won't be putting yourself in a difficult financial situation as long as you do wait...because if you put yourself in a difficult situation and then something else beyond your control happens, there might be nothing you can do.

Take it from an old guy (57) who's no longer in debt; set up a special savings account of X dollars per pay check (automatic deduction) and wait. Learn about and plan what you are going to do once you get the money saved. Save more than the minimum that you need to make the mods. Once you've bought whatever you want, continue with the savings account. By now you aren't missing the money anymore (at least not too much). Now, in the future when you want to buy something within reason, you can go out and buy for cash.

I've bought a nice single lens reflex digital camera, lens and flash plus the current mods to my truck that way. I'm buying the equipment to bore stroke my engine to a 408 by using the same financial plan. I'll still have money in the kitty at the end of the day.

This kind of financial discipline (like that offered by some others above) will take you a lot further in life.

Steve

I got a couple grand on a card from the labor and a couple last bits of my new setup... those unexpected things that come up, always happens. But I have about 3000 in parts that came off my old setup left to sell..... so as soon as I offload them I'll be clear, I'll be clear before the end of the year wether the parts go or not.

No debt ever on mods, i factor them in as recreational.

Paid for the SS outright 5 years ago but I can easily see why a car payment would be ok.

If you're gonna have debt, make sure it's from an investment. Mortgage, student loans, etc. These cars are fun but that's as far as I'd go.

Bought all my mods with cash, I don't even have a credit card, never have. I just broke my 10 bolt at the track sat, but it's winter, the Z-71 needs new tires, so the WS6 will rest in the garage til spring. I'll buy a 9in and have the car ready when the nice weather is back.

$18,700 for the car, $4-5k in mods, No debt so far. Im in college and have 2 vehicles to take care of and lots of bills. i dont mod untill bills are paid and i have at least the minimum ammount of cash for the mod PLUS half in the "mod account". Priorities and Patience are the only things that have kept me from going broke. Like alot of you have said before, this is just a hobby, it just happens to be addictive . i work my *** off and spend alot of money to make my car badass but i work to much to drive it. car has clocked about 5 miles in 2 weeks!

I only owe a car payment. I will never use a credit card to pay for mods. I don't want to end up in debt like some of my friends just to have a faster car. I would rather use that credit card money for emergancies except for my BP gas card and I get 5% on gas so that is my only debt.

I have never put mods on credit.....though it was tempting sometimes when I came accross a good deal. I gotta agree with the others......start a little savings account for mod money.

When I spun a rod bearing and needed to save cash for a new shortblock I cut back on going out. It's amazing how much you can save when you stop going to the bar and eating out all the time.
