Default if you went from 4 degrees overlap to 8 degrees overlap,

would you even notice a difference in the driving characteristics??or would the tune make it irrelevant

In a very general statement: rougher idle, loss down low, and gain up top.

Tuning always plays a big part, but those are inherent characteristics of changing overlap. The intake and exhaust valves will now both be open for a longer amount of time, making it harder to fill the cylinder at low rpm's and easier to fill it at high rpm's through the scavenging effect.

That pretty much sums it up! More lope, worse gas mileage, etc...

However, were talking 4* here. I highly doubt that it going to kill MPG and low end power. If the set-up needs the overlap, it will respond with power. I believe the driveability issue can be tuned.
