Default After Market MAF's good/bad

My question is basically are they worth it? I know someone who had a Granatelli MAF and produced more or the same HP without it. Also I was at a dyno day in Sept. someone there had a SLP MAF and removed it after 2 runs. The third run he added about 5 HP and the fourth run put out the same HP as the second run.

Are after market MAFs only good for lightly modded engines? I'm sure the claims in HP increase from the manufactures is on stock engines. Just from what little I've seen it seems that money could be better spent on a mod that would work even after other mods.

Comments.

You are asking a question that will net you about 6000 answers. To sum it up, different cars respond to different MAFs. My brother put on a GMS MAF at the track after about 4 runs and consistently ran 1 MPH faster on his next 2 runs.

I personally will trying a Pace LS6 MAF as I've heard excellent results from it and John @ Pace really stands by his parts.

Just my $.02

On some cars it takes away HP and on others it gives you HP...lean or rich...it all depends..if you get one its best to buy a MAF translator with it...

You know my opinion Rob... hehehe...

My car makes about as much power as anyone's stock car without headers. I run the stock screened MAF. If I thought I could pick up up some power with a 5 minute mod, I'd be there.

My car is the one that went through 3 GMAF's. Even with a MAFT to equalize the 02's, it didn't make as much power (-3) as stock.

Snake oil... At least for stock motors.

Yeah Pat you were the one I was talking about for the Granetelli, I just wasn't going to use your name. I think after I have some of the mods done that I want I may look into a MAF later. Or better yet see if I can barrow someones to see if it will do anything for my setup.

Just wanted to see what others thought.

I've tried 3 and they were all a waste of money. Stock, descreened MAF is a-ok for me.

I went from stock...to ported stock with Whisper ends to GMAF...

Could I 'honestly' say I got some gains at the track? Hmmmm...depends on my mood.
The biggest gain was going to the descreend whisper ends. At the very least a 'cheap' mod would be to get rid of the screen and file down the poles on the top and bottom of the sensors.
Going to the GMAF(bought used) didnt produce a whole lot, but after getting over some SES codes by cleaning it with some CRC QB electronic cleaner (THANKS SHOOTER!) I seemed to have gotten rid of the codes. The following trip to the track netted me my best pass to date. Could have been weather, could have been the MAF..who knows.
I agree that some cars take to it..some dont.
My advice, buy one used...If it works..GREAT..if not..sell it off to somebody for who it may help.

It all depends on the car, if you are running rich a aftermarket MAF may help out however of you are already lean it may cause problems, it's pretty much a hit or miss situation! The Pace LS6 MAF worked out well for my '98, with ported ends it would ping rather badly in the summer time, it was just too lean.

I think each car is differnt, like stated several times here. On several bolt-on cars, I have picked up ~10hp with a ported stock maf. This was 10 to the wheels on a dynojet. Yet, on my 2000 SS that ran a 10.94 @ 123.50 Heads/Cam, I ran a STOCK descreened maf. No porting.....and it didn't seem to hurt my times

When it comes to MAFs, you best budy is autotap!

Thanks for all the posts.

From the sounds of it the best thing to is keep the stock MAF and add some ported ends to it. Which I already have from a Z28 I just traded in. That and maybe a MAF translator and/or computer reprogramming.

You don't need reprogramming, just a MAFT
