I had MAF ends for a while, but they didn’t work out to well on my car (too lean) so I sold them. I’m back to a totally stock unit now, and I’m wondering at what point does the MAF become a real airflow restriction? I’m planning on MACs and a small cam (comp 212/218) plus the mods in my sig. Is it really worth d*cking with the MAF for that kind of setup?

RPM WS6,
Your stock mass air is already restricting you. I would go with an SLP Mass air ($154.95) it's inexpensive, and will flow the most. We use them on all of our LS1 cars here.

Im pretty sure Cartek is using a stock descreened Maf on Daves stage 2 head and cam car. There in the low 11s consistently.

Your MAF will not be a restriction for a long time.
intake, then heads will hurt you first.
I'm making low to mid 600's at the motor on the stock MAF, heads and cam, and the '01+ intake. The intake is holding me back at in the upper RPM ranges.
spend you money elsewhere <img src="images/icons/smile.gif" border="0">

Well, it looks like most are in agreement but I will throw in my $.02. The stock MAF is really not a restriction until you get pretty wild in your combo. I would stay with the stock one.

I would worry about switching MAF's when you are in the 370+ g/sec range.
I ran an 11.38@121 with a stock LT1 MAF (just de-screened) I switched to a Z06 unit (used the GM Z06 table for a spot on calibration - reflashed the computer) and went from 417rwhp to 418rwhp. Dyno corrections were different, etc. I see ~ 350g/sec @ 6800 rpm.
We were at TAD working with Jordon Mussers LT1 (402 solid roller) - he was seeing 350-390 g/sec with a ported MAF - very inconsistant. Switching to a stock MAF he was maxxing it out at ~415 g/sec at 7000 rpm - he went from 125mph to 130 mph. This is because of metering problems with the ported unit - I would never use a ported unit; if you want a larger MAF go with a Z06 unit and get it properly calibrated - but I would be suprised if you saw any difference NA. FI is a different matter entirely though.

Thanks guys for all the replies. Looks like I’ll be leaving the MAF alone.

almost nil.
a) 98's run a little richer than 99 and above
b) removing the MAF really doesn't increase the flow enough to worry about lean A/F ratios
c) I did that to my 98 Z back in march of 1998 and I have had 0 problems with regards to a lean condition.

Anyone know A what A good setting for my maf translator to just richen the car A lil bit, I dont have way to auto tap it?
I thought by adding the mac headers w/orp would richen the car A bit, it didnt so when I use the nos it is pinging and I feel some vibration so I let off. Dont want to blow the engine. Is my car lean from maybe the SLP Maf w/no screen?

FWIW, Ed Wright told me to use the stock MAF for his custom tuning. Said a larger MAF would only cause lean conditions. Leaner conditions are what nets the HP gain, but you may be walking a fine line. Ed says use the stock MAF when he programs.

I have Ed's programming also. Through the course, I've tried a GMS MAF, stock ported MAF, and a totally stock, screen intact MAF. The car is hands down better with the stock MAF installed. I don't even use my MAF translator any more.
On my particular combo anyway, a stock MAF is the real deal...
