Default Freaking crank pulley bolt

Well when I changed the oil in the blower today I got a big surprise and it wasn't a good one.
The Crank pulley bolt was loose. It was still all the way in but I was able to turn it out by hand.

I ended up cutting it off and only using one of the 3 supplied washers that is sent with the ATI kit.(As per Black LS1 T/A's suggestion) I tightened it down as tight as I could get it. 40 ft/lb + 120*+

This is just a warning to check your crank pulley bolt. If you've have ever had it off for any reason you might want to check it.

I took the car out afterwards and seem to be seeing an extra .5# of boost also. This makes me think the crank pulley has been spinning free for a while now.

Everybody please check your crank pulley bolt.

Did you use locktite on the threads when you put it in?

If you did and it broke loose, that must be one hell of a car..

You do know that you are not supposed to re-use crank pulley bolts right? They lose their tension after they've been "stretched"...

Discard it and replace with new each time.

Nope

I never would have thought after using a 2' extention on a breaker bar to tighten it that it would come loose.

You better believe it got some this time though

I'm not using the stock bolt. ATI said the bolt that comes with there kit can be reused.

Others have reused the ATI bolt also and not had problems.

The stock bolt does have to be discarded after use though.

That's to seat the pulley fully

you then back off and go like 38-4- + 120 degrees.

You should really install a keyway for a blower setup, or other locking mechanism, as this is an ongoing problem with GM cars. The LT1 has the same issues of spinning dampers.

Thats exactly what I'm going to do when I build my motor up this winter. Why in the hell doesn't GM do this from the factory?

Is that ATI bolt alum. ? If it is and you tightened it more than once it's streched. No matter what ATI says alum. bolts stress under pressure. Try a new bolt or a keyway like mentioned before, that should solve the problem for enternity.

Definately not aluminum. Here are the specs on the bolt. Its metric.

Grade 14.4, M16-2.0*140

Hopefully loctite will do until I get a keyway cut into the crank in my new motor.
