Best tool out there in my opinion is the Crane tool, Vinci has it as a web special for $89. Does two springs at once and was designed to do the rear cylinders on an f-body where you can't see back there very well.
You have to be careful of the claw type on some springs. For example, if they are nitrided or shot peened and you scratch up the surface, you have basically ruined the surface treatment.
flat piece of steel thats cut (think metal not sheet metal) a threaded bar and a nut is all you need. i wouldnt use a claw type, and im not sure you could fit one back in there either

Crane tool - I found that I had to use the upper plate upside down with the larger diameter valve springs (on the Patriot heads) or I couldn't get the keepers in. The openings weren't large enough. Made the job easy when working in the car.
