Question Compression test / Leak down test

I tried to do a search and got an error message.

Questions

1. Which is more reliable and easier?

2. With 10.4:1 SCR what should my compression test range be?

A leak down test is much more accurate in determining a problem, but is also much more complex and involved than a standard comp. test. The static compression range (nominal psi.) of an engine is determined more by the camshaft, and not so much the compression ratio. You could have a 13.0:1 engine pump 150 psi, and an 9.0:1 engine pump 210 psi. It all depends on the overlap of the camshaft. That is why you will see specs for compared percentages versus an actual psi. range.

After doing "the Google" I am going to do the leakdown test. I found some info and it seems it would be easier than me trying to get a compression test done at home by myself.

They really serve two different purposes. Comp test will tell you if it should run OK, leak test will tell you how well the rings, valves, headgasket are working and which area is a problem. BTW todays comp testers screw in and have a release valve so doing it yourself is a snap.

yea you can go buy a compression tester at any auto parts store pretty much for under $50 and all you do is screw in the adapter fitting into the whole for the spark plug. then you turn your engine over a couple of times and then you are done
