I have a 99 Formula with a Superchips tunner know. And I did the dumb thing of of selling the HPP3 with out keeping a log with the HPP3 on my Atap before I got the Superchips tunner my question is were is the timing usually at on the HPP3. Mine is at 27 with the Superchips and goes up to only 40.5 or so I could of swore the HPP3 gave me up to 44.5 or so and was at 28 but im not possitive. please post your timing numbers with a HPP3.
thanks,
Mike H.

You only want to worry about timing at WOT (100% TPS). I saw 29* timing w/ hpp3 and stock MAF. This is up about 1.5* compared to stock tuning.

Yes, look at timing at WOT. With stock tuning, timing would start at 25-26 and climb to 30.5. With HPP3 non-rfg tuning, timing will start at 28-29 and climb to 30.5.

Jamie, do you have a stock MAF? The most my car would see (as well as others) w/ stock maf and tuning would be 27.5* max timing at WOT.

Please pardon my ignorance everyone, but what is "timing" on the engine? Could someone elaborate? Thank You!!

Timing is simply when the ignition system fires the spark plug.
The faster a pistons velocity is the sooner the spark has to fire to insure maximum downforce is on the piston during combustion. This is where the term "advance" comes in. Too advanced spark, and you get pre-ignition. Too retarded spark delivery and the majority of the stroke going down is not forced down, because the mixture is ignited with too much space during the maximum burn of the mix. for instance when its said that 30 degrees of timing is good, then that means you are firing 30 degrees before top dead center. As RPM's slow, so does the time to fire. Say around 20 degrees mabey.

Very cool! Thank You!
So what's the ideal timing for the LS1 at WOT??
Considering my modest mods

On a basically stock car, I saw no increase in timing w/HPP3, but lots of KR.(this summer)
I think "ideal" timing is a subject for debate, judging from some posts I've read where people picked up HP with LOWER timing. My answer for that would be whatever timing works best for the individual engine.

Just to add fuel to the fire, ideal timing for a '98-'00 LS1 will be different than ideal timing on an '01+ LS1 due to the different cam. I was seeing 25 degrees at WOT stock in my '02. I added a set of fully ported stock MAF ends, and I gained 0 HP on the dyno and showed no improvement at the track. The MAF added a solid 2 degrees of timing.
On my '98 T/A, I showed 25 degrees of timing stock and 29 degrees with the HPP3 non-RFG tuning. I picked up 5 RWHP on the dyno with the added timing.
