Default How does COOLANT get in the motor?

This is NOT in my Z28 (thank goodness), but I'm still curious, if coolant is coming out the exhaust, is the ONLY culprit a blown head gasket?

What else could cause it (I guess pouring coolant in the oil fill cap, but besides that?).

Our Volvo busted a heater core hose, so the shop fixed that but now the SES light is on and there is coolant in the exhaust. The temp never reached over halfway, but is that any indication that the head gasket might still be blown?

This sucks.... any thoughts or other possible explanations? Thanks guys...

It could also be a cracked block.

On a cold running engine open the radiator cap and see if there are air bubbles coming up. If so you prolly have a cracked block or blown head gasket. I said blown head! Hehehehe <img src="graemlins/gr_jest.gif" border="0" alt="[jester]" />

It was the head gasket - the mechanic just emailed me and told me for sure.

I think I still need the 'oh-crap-its-the-head-gasket-what-am-i-going-to-do' smiley... here it is:

Oof. Im damn sorry bout' that from another Volvo owner. Excellent time to change the Timing belt, BTW, if you havent done it yet.

Two items:
THe car has low enough compression, it doesnt need any more gasket.

It needs more tranny. If you have a IPD or PESTuning computer and runnign anymore than 1.1 bar, you are gonna either grenade the tranny (have you seen it? its the size of a cantalope!!!) or you are going to pop a connecting rod (Volvo racing folks *immediately* changed to Carillo when they went touring car racing). The folks at TME (www.tme.com) are totally on top of what the other parts can do, and they told me I am on the hairs edge of dropping the tranny like a flying watermelon.

Is yours an auto or 5 speed? This one is a five speed, the guys at IPD told me the manual tranny and clutch were good for a tad more power than the intake, exhaust, and chip give to it, and I'm below that level.

I'm pretty sure we are going to dump the price down another thousand and try and sell it (after fixing the gasket).

Its an auto.

If I could sell it for good $$$, I would do it in a heartbeat. The electrical problems in the car drive me absolutely apeshit. And then there are the suspension squeaks, the brake rotors, and the oil consumption.
The IPD guys have *no* idea what the cars handle. They resell TME computers, hence when I called, they had no idea what the computers even really did other than "raise the boost".
ugh.

I found my oil leak :-/

I pulled off the spark plug cover ("Volvo 20 Valve") and it was a huge pool of oil under there. I have soaked it up and now I have to wait to see where the little/big leak is.....

At least Im in the pacific NW. Poor corvette/camaro driving, but great place to sell a fast aggressive looking Volvo...

Good point, that's not the first time I've heard that. I lowered the price on mine to $14,900... maybe I'll get some bites.
