I suppose you are refering to guide plates? If so they when you use non-self aligning rockers, you use these nothed plated that bolt done under the rocker studs and hold the pushrods in alignment so that the rocker tip will stay on the valve

The valve guides are what the valves move up and down inside of. The stock ones are cast iron, but bronze guides are sometimes used as replacements when the stockers get worn out. They are a tolerance fit, so once they start to wear out, you'll get poor valve sealing, lost power and usually some oil consumption.

Both the above are correct...

The valve guide is a necessary piece pressed into all heads. Its a sleeve that the valve stem slides inside of as it opens and closes. The valve seals snap over this to form teh actual seal though.

The pushrod guide plates are used in some aftermarket rockers, but not in the stock application on LSx motors.

Mikey 97Z M6, are you sure the stock valve guiders are cast iron? All the heads ive touched look like they have bronze guides, or atleast somewhat yellowish unlike grey iron.

A lot of the aftermarket heads come with bronze guides because they're supposed to have better lubricating properties (but wear faster) over CI. Most the factory heads come with CI guides because GM wants longevity. I know stock LT1 heads came with iron guides. I get my dis-assembled stock 5.3l heads back from the machine shop next week. I can double check them at that time, but I'm 99% sure they'll be cast iron guides too. Most of the pictures of stock ported heads I've seen have CI also.
