Default EGR block off? What do you need if for?

Sorry for the dumb question guys, but I have to know. I'm doing a header install during the x-mas break. What does the EGR and air tubes do and what are the good for. What will happen if i block them off (pros and cons). Thanks for any help.

Sorry again for the dumb post but atleast i'm not asking what's the best sounding muffler

No HP gains that I know of. The only problem is you will get an SES light if you don't have them removed from the PCM with custom tuning.
It does clean up the engine compartment a little. Makes it easier to get at the passenger side plugs.

The AIR pump system pumps in air during cold start. Cleans up your emissions.
