Default A/C eliminates pinging? Hmmm...

BIG COOLING THREAD

My car has a bad habit of pinging at low throttle positions, mostly in low load situations in higher gears, but it also happens when I shift between just about an two gears (accelerating). <img src="gr_sad.gif" border="0"> Anyway, I have noticed a strange pattern, if I turn on my A/C to defrost and put it on the second speed setting (on when I start the car until I turn it off) the pinging magically stops. <img src="images/icons/confused.gif" border="0"> Does the A/C start a second fan? Maybe my "always on" fan is shorting out??? Do fans set trouble codes...nothing is showing up but there is DEFINATELY something going on. :whiner:

Second point of interest. ASP pulleys obviously underdrive all belt driven components...including the water pump. What kind of engine coolant temp increases do any other ASP owners see? I think have an U/D system is SIGNIFICANTLY reducing the effectiveness of the cooling system. I have a 180* thermostat right now but switching to the 160* thermo won't do anything for me (coolant temps are always about 200*). Does 200* seem a little high to everyone else, too?

Next, has anyone had a good experience with the SLP fan switch? I'll throw in the money if I knew that it was a worthwhile investment.

Finally, I am running a straight 50/50 mixture of coolant (right from the antifreeze bottle). Can I do anything to increase the heat-carrying capacity of the system? More water? Can I run straight water and Water Wetter? Is that even possible.

As you can see I am trying to maximize cooling capabilities for my 382 stroker..

Can anyone contribute? I am looking for some major answers here... <img src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" border="0" alt="[hail]" />

Merry X-Mass all! <img src="graemlins/gr_xmas.gif" border="0" alt="[santa]" />

I "believe" that running the defroster also runs the AC, and that when just the AC is on the fans run on low speed. Fans can produce trouble codes, I can get one with my manual fan switch if the fans are on when the car is started. Don't remember if it sets the MIL though.
Are you checking the temps via Autotap? Maybe the fans on low are putting you over the pinging threshold.

Yes, all temperature readings are taken via AutoCrap. What do you mean about fans putting me over the pinging threshold? As far as I know they are both operating correctly (although I need to verify this) but I am not sure what setting they are running at (fan or slow). What can I do to check this? Thanks for the reply. <img src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Does anyone else have any information or answers to my original questions? <img src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" border="0" alt="[hail]" />
