Default Car is apart, cam is going in, I have a question, HELP!

Everything is off my car and my cam is going in. I am about half done and taking a break for the night. I am not going to use a compressor to hold the valves up, but I am gonna bring the piston the top so the valve will hit the piston if it falls, but how do I know which piston is at the top. I read a document on this before but can't find it. Please help, I am finishing tommorrow. Thanks

Brendon...

I dont understand your question. I DO understand by your question that you must have the valve springs removed. You are worried that the valves will fall into the cylinders. Am I right?

Lets say you turn the engine so the #1 piston is at the top of the compression stroke. Well, the #1 and the #6 piston will keep the valves from falling. But how about #2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8? They will fall.

If you allready removed all your spring (without compressed air), the valves would have already have fallin.

Again, I dont really understand what is going on here with your question.

Sorry,
Ron

I just e-mailed you the document you may be looking for. Hope it helps.

Again, I still dont understand your question about the valves.

I would have thought that you would just install the cam, then change out the valve springs afterward.

Your not talking about the lifters falling when your cam is out during the night, are you?

I used cotton clothesline fed in to the spark plug hole. Feed as much as you can in to the motor. Gently turn motor by hand (with socket/bolt on crank) until it won't turn any more. Change valvesprings. Rotate motor opposite direction slightly, pull out all rope. Move on to next hole.

Piece of cake. Cheap. Takes a while, though.

What I mean is when you take the spring off the valve, the valve is no longer being held up and will fall into the cylinder right? So I was going to rotate the pistons until each piston is at the top, and change the spring of the cylinder at the top. I haven't actually put the cam in yet, but after the springs, that is the next step.
