was talking with a friend of mine that has a lot of experience with building sbc's and he was saying that we could angle mill my heads when we port them........anybody have any experience with this??

Bad Idea!!!! The LS1 head already has a valve to piston angle of 15 degrees. This is better than what NASCAR uses (18 degrees) Stock coventional Chevy small blocks are at 23 degrees. The factory engineers put an extreme amount of thought into this new motor. They pretty much put together a race motor with a street cam and fuel/air maps. Dont mess with the angle of the heads!!!! You'll be sorrrrrrrry!!!

QBone
That would be the valve centerline angle to the head.
Angle milling of the heads giveS you the benefit of milling the head to increase compression with out having to mill the manifold to match the head. In most cases you can get away with using the stock intake gaskets.

Any one else?

The 15 degrees is the difference in valve centerline to a line that is perpendicular to the deck surface of the heads. If you alter the deck surface by angle milling, the perpendicualr line will rotate and thus decrease the amount of angle between the valve centerline and the perpendicular to the deck surface. Thus the valves will be less than 15 degree angle after angle milling.

TJ</strong><hr></blockquote>Sorry for getting back late. I would just get a very good bowl port on these heads (Joe Prince Racing) and don't worry about the angle milling. Your friend is right about angle milling giving you more H.P., but I'm just saying that our heads from the factory are at a very good angle to begin with. Conventional 23 degree heads can benefit from an angle mill, but our heads are so much better anyway. I bet you would also have a intake manifold to head match up problem doing this too.

I am not sure if you guys are getting your wires cross or what. but angle milling is diffrent to decking or just milling the head. angle milling is to change the valve angle to the piston (15,18,23 degrees)it also changes the compression of the engine. Milling changes just the compression and your P too V clerance. because of the plastic intake you can't really angle mill the heads anyways.

Qbone some how I missed your post the time I posted this.

Folks,
You guys that are wanting milled heads are all getting about .030" flat milled off you stock heads. That will net you about 10.5 CR vs your stock 10.1 CR

Forget about angle milling. That .030" flat milled cut from your heads will not present an angle interferance problem between your head and intake manifold. Don't worry about it.

With a .030" flat cut from your cyl heads just install .050" shorter pushrods (7.350" length) vs stock (7.400" length) in the motor and you should have no problems with your hydraulic lifter preload.

Why does anyone here want to angle mill a set of heads that will only be shaved .030"?

Angle milling is an option used for heads that in most cases get a +.050" cut. These folks have sealing problems between the head and intake manifold mateing surfaces. Not really a situation we will be involved in with LS1 heads.

Just my opinion,
Good luck
Ron
