Default Timing only at 15.5 @ WOT

I am posting this for a buddies car.He came by my house today and said his car was running like crap at WOT. So we put on the ATAP and go for a ride everything looked good then he nailed it and his 02's were at 910 and timing at WOT was 15.5 . The timing looks normal under normal driving but at WOT it went to crap. and it didnt pick up any KR . I used the atap 3 days ago on it and the timing was at 27.5. Do you think the timing chain could be stretched ? Please someone

My timing fluctuates a bit, but 15.5 does seem really low. My normal is about 28 degrees with 0 KR, but it gets as low as 22 once in a while. I have no idea why. Back to the top for you.

Hey street racer...... The timing chain dose not have anything to do with that Timing.
The car is probaly detonating at WOT.

Look at the log and see what the temp was at. I have noticed mine going from 26* at 194* temp to 12.5-15.5 at 230* temp.. Just my 2 cents..

...Oh, and no, the timing chain has nothing to do with this.

Colonel, it only happens at WOT I am going to pull the plugs today and it has a little exhaust leak as well so that may be causing something as well.....Mike H.

TTT for ya..

I A-taped my car and was getting 17 degree's at WOT. Although the car had 450 miles on it.. But I am curious to see what the solution is.

I need to a-tap again, cause I am sitting at 2200 miles now.

If the header leak is that bad it may be the reason.. It is sensing Knock...

What RPM are you guys seeing this timing. The lower the RPM the lower the timing is going to be. What is you WOT at 6000 RPM with no KR?

Hey,LIL SS or StreeetRacer do you have a A4?I do and my timing is low like that but I havent looked at the temp, good idea.I was wondering when your timing is that low, does your car surge forward, then lose power, like its holding back?I'm trying to figure this out too!!!Thanks

This is my experience so far. I know this might stir up the temp debate again that we have seen many times, but I’m just showing my facts per A-tap..

I was at the track pissed as I could only get 14.5-15.5* timing at 5900rpm at WOT.

A couple weeks later I had some time and went through all the boltons on my car to try and find out what was going on. Took all the parts off and went to stock. Same thing, crappy timing. I thought there was some thing completely wrong with the PCM as (BLKOUT) kept putting that in my head.. I had in the past seen 23* or so with my current boltons. When I went through all my logs rechecking O2 readings, Intake temp, KR, Ltrims, Temp, Timing, Rpm, vehicle speed I over looked some thing. Tempeture!!! At the track I was at 230*, the other time with crappy timing I was at 217-225.. the few times that I saw 23*+ was when I was in the 190 temp range 5800+ rpm.. I then got in the car since it was nice an cool, fired it up went for a pass on a back road.. 194* temp 25.5* timing at 6k rpms. I have since then installed a fan switch. I have not seen anything lower than 24* @ 6000 WOT since.

In short version.. Temp kills my timing!!! Anything over 205 hurts me!! I am sure if you get the car too cold it will hurt you as well.

Give it a look, I hope it is something simple like mine was. It is a headache looking for those problems..

LIL, that makes a a lot of sense. PCM could pull out timing to avoid potential detonation.

phantom meneSS, after seeing some posts from you guys here and on other forums, I asked if your fuel was lower octane. Some said yay, some nay. I had wondered if your LS1s pcm is just programmed for lower timing because of the fuel.
I would expect that your pcms would react to lower timing under higher air/water temps like ours do. On my "back road" tuning I typically pull 27.5 degrees of timing at WOT, which is pretty normal for our cars, at least the pre-2001s.

The cars timing was a perfect 27.5 for ever
now it jumps down to 16.00 but it is just
for a second.
I don't know why but it scares me because
I am getting ready to spray the **** out
of it.

Is it droping to 16* when shifting?

What RPM does it drop to 16*? Is it above 4k RPM at WOT that is drops to 16*..

Does it go from say 25* @ 5500, 16* @ 5600, 26* @ 5700???

Do you have an A-tap log you can share with the rest of us? It might help us figure it out..
