Should I replace the oil pump while doing cam swap?
I am wondering if it is a good idea to replace the oil pump and timing chain while doing a cam swap, the motor has about 12,000 miles.

If you're looking towards a high volume pump, such as the ARE unit, definately cheap insurance. Even the newer pumps have been known to fail.
Lets see....A 150 dollar oil pump and no worries, or a spun bearing....which should I pick??
Good luck

No you really don't need to replace the oil pump. It is also not neccesary to put a high volume pump on a stock internal engine. plus you have to remove the oil pan to replace the pump.
I install cams all the time just make sure you use a good prelube on the cam and also the cam retaining plate.

He is installing a cam, his car won't be "stock internal" anymore. Some cams have to be wound out to 6500+ rpm's, are you trying to say that a higher volume pump wouldn't be good for that application?

No, you do not have to remove the oil pan to do this. It's very simple.....Loosen all the pan bolts enough to drop it against the cradle which gives you just enough room to work in there, loosen the pickup tube bolt on and pump and slide it out, slide the new one in and tighten up the pickup tube bolt. It's that simple.

I replaced my oil pump at 9,500 miles. Definitely cheap insurance. Just don't drop the pickup tube bolt into the oil pan

Ask some of the guys on here with failed pumps if it’s a good idea. Jake99SS is loosing his second stock oil pump. He’s now getting an ARE unit. I plan on an ARE unit when my cam goes in this spring...

Yah, I put an ARE pump on my motor with engine in the car, without dropping the pan (just loosened it a little, dropped it down about 1/2"). Followed the instructions on your pages. Of course, I had ~46k miles on my pump.
And have a magnetic pickup tool around for the oil pump bolt. He sure likes to shimmy towards the back of that pan pretty quick!
Oh, and make sure that if you have friends helping you, that you double check the torque on the pan bolts. Friends who don't tighten all the pan bolts really can be a pain.

Re: Should I replace the oil pump while doing cam swap?
When I say stock internalls I'm mainly talking about the oil clearances in the bearings. most of the time a stock short block has tighter clearances so a high volume pump is not necessary. I didn't say it would hurt. I've done many many cam installs and I've never put a ported and shimed pump on.

Re: Should I replace the oil pump while doing cam swap?
Our oil pump is something we highly recommend with any cam swap. We've just seen too many pump failures over the past few years.
Our pump begins with the latest gm design and we go from there. A lot of the bluerprinting is to prevent the bypass valve from getting stuck, creating a loss of pressure.
All our pumps are meticulously cleaned of any casting flash in any oil flow path. We also raise oil pressure on an avg of 10-15lbs. This is important for the lifters in high rpm applications with cams with aggressive profiles. What it does is help prevent the lifters from collapsing under the extreme forces exerted on them.
I can have a pump shipped within 24hours of ordering. They are $149.95
A small expense you will never miss, but be forever grateful for.

And after buying one, see my site in the sig to figure out how to install it. Its an extra hour labor and $149.95 for a LOT of peace of mind....
Camaroholic, glad my page could be of use
