Default Anybody using an alignment tool after cam swap?

My '99 Helms manual (page 6-357) says to use an alignment tool to get the front oil seal centered around the crank. The tool is listed as "J 41476". Do I need this tool, and where can I buy one online?

Thanks alot,
John

Dont need one. If you put it back on and you start leaking oil, its because you need a new front seal. Those are a couple bucks at the dealer. If you used a new front seal every time, I bet you'd never need the alignment tool

I've used that tool on the 2 cam swaps I've done. I have a friend that that is a tech at a GM dealer and let's me borrow that tool. There is a lot of slop in the timing chain cover when the bolts are loose and I don't see how you can position the seal correctly without it. Just my .02.

Before you tighten the front cover bolts, just reinstall your harmonic dampener (or u/d pulley). This will line it up back to your pulley.

I just installed my 5th cam, and have replaced the front seal once. No leaks here, either.

In fact, the only "specialty" tool I used to assemble my engine was a torque angle gauge. No probs whatsoever with anything for the ~2 years it's been together.

However, I say if you have access to the specialty tools called for in the manual, then by all means use them.
