Default FTRA on an SS

I want to buy an FTRA for my SS. I understand that this will work, but I have to seal the front of my air box? Do I have to do this?

No, you do not have to seal the front of the airbox, and I wouldn't recommend it either. But, if I owned a Camaro I'd definitely do a FTRA setup or similar.

Us Pontiac boys are lucky because we can modify the stock hoods to work even better

Good, even though the SS hood isn't that functional, i'd like to think it is.

Had a Whisper Ram Air (identical to FTRA) on my 99 SS and the same one on my 01 Formula with a ram air hood and lower airbox.

I've never sealed the front. I'm a true believer in the more air is better concept

Tony, how much do you have to modify the stock hood for more air, and how much of a pain in the butt is it???

I've got one on my SS...works like a champ. Stock SS hood is a joke for getting cool air.

Sooner or later I am going to do it...I will also combine it with a raised airbox...

Right now all I got is the free ram air...

Didn't seal my front of airbox. According to auto-tap, it's not necessary. The IAT drops dramatically once the car is moving, a sure sign the FTRA works well.

I sealed the front. What's the point of buying a pressurized ram air setup if you're not going to seal it?

I'm sure it doesn't make a whole lotta difference, but it just seems kinda pointless.

I only unseal it in the hard rain. No pressure == less chance of sucking up water.

I have the FTRA on my 2001 & I did block off the front of the airbox. That's the only way to get it somewhat pressurized at higher speeds. I got better gas mileage after installation & at high speeds my car keeps going & going & you get the point. Definitely a good mod for me.

I'm running the FTRA and didn't seal the front. I think what little air pressure is coming in the front will keep the air from under the car from excaping through the front. I may try it both ways at the track early next year to see what happens.

The BEST performance, throttle response and fuel economy will be achieved with the front rubber seal in place. Remember, air takes the path of least resistance. Since the stock SS hood is not sealed to the air box and has escape paths for pressurized air, it will simply bleed off any pressure that the ram air kit generates.

We have a lot of customers who have done this testing at the track and all have confirmed the same results.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly. I don't get a chance to check all the boards that often

The main idea behind the FTRA is to provide the LS1 with cooler ( than under hood ) air, giving you better engine performance. Hence; 'Cold Air Induction'! If you leave the front of the airbox unsealed, then you are introducing 'under hood' heated air into the LS1. I installed the FTRA on my 2000 SS 'Vert for the very reason that the stock hood to airbox set up is not sealed ( what was SLP thinking ). When I first looked under the hood of my 'Vert, I seriously thought that there was some sort of seal missing between the hood and the airbox. Once I inquired about this, I found out that there is no factory hood/airbox seal. SLP could have put a little more thought into this! I'm not bashing SLP or the SS hood/scoop setup as IMO, the SS hood is awesome!

John - thats exactley what I though. Whatever air is coming through the front (because of the SS ramair) would keep it from losing pressure.
