Default Another valve spring bites the dust....

Well, after only about 8K miles on the new engine (rebuilt valvetrain due to last failure) I have lost ANOTHER valve spring. I got these from Julio at CARTEK who assured me that the stroker motor and the .568" lift I had would not be a problem for these springs. The car had been running a little rugged and today the inner spring on #5 intake decided to let go. THANK GOD it didn't drop a valve into the cylinder. At first glace I couldn't even tell that a spring was damaged after taking off the valve covers. Only after feeling each valve spring was I able to tell that one had failed. Well, at least it can be fixed. Never know when these things will go.

Right now I am trying to get a hold of Julio (tough guy to get!)....I hope his customer service is as good as everbody claims.

I don't think so, in fact I'm pretty damn sure they aren't. The only reason I know this is because these "new" LS1 springs were such a secret when I bought them about 8 mounts ago that Julio wouldn't tell me who made them for fear that this information would get out...

He stated the inner spring broke thus I think he is running dual springs. The new 918's are single spring thus I don't think they are the ones he is talking about.

your right 918s are light weight single springs

I'm running a 382 with all the goodies. This is not the first time I have had to deal with broken springs, last time I lost a head and a piston when the spring dropped the valve in the engine when it failed. At least I was lucky this time and that didn't happen. I will post more this afternoon when I have an update from Julio at CARTEK.

Yes, I am talking about the dampner, I was not running a double spring like some suggested. Found out today that they were Crowlers...

Julio at CARTEK is now suggesting that I run the CC 918's and the new stock type titanium retainers that they have designed for the LS1. There goes another chunk of money....

Didn't you pay an excessive amount of money for those springs because they WOULDN'T break

My vote: pull the heads and get doubles

For reference: doubles on the left, singles on the right

I definitely agree with Fireball. You've had too many problems w/ the single springs, and I wouldn't risk it again. I'll be interested to see what is said in another 8 mos. if you break another.
I'd just pull the heads and put the extra money in a set of springs that you KNOW will last.

One other thing...FYI...every spring that broke on my car had a nice matching custom valve relief on the piston. I stopped driving immediately too.

look at piston #1 in this pic....nice big valve relief

Did the valve need replacing too? As it stands right now I am planning on replacing the springs and retainers only...unless I need to know more.

And, yes, I am very disappointed that these expensive springs broke on me. I feel angry that Julio at CARTEK insured me that these would work for the car and would be the last springs that "I would ever need to buy." Seems like they tell you what you want to hear to get the sale. Don't get me wrong, I think Julio is a great guy and knows a lot but this **** is getting expensive.

to my knowledge the valve didn't need replacing.

But to do doubles...you have to pull heads and have the pockets machined to fit the springs.

It was worth the extra $$$ to have it done right IMO

You guys are making me feel much better about my decision to have my heads set up with doubles....
Now if I could just get the heads back from the machine shop....
