Default Difference between 98 and 01 temp gauge

I know my 2001 Temp gauge is a POS!!! GM has set it up so it does not work correctly. My friend has a 98 WS6 and his gauge works great. Here is my question..

How did GM change it so it does not work right for the 99+ models? Is it the sending unit? The gauge? Some king of programming?

I'm thinking of buying what I need from a 98 to get it to work right, if it is gauge or sending unit related. If any of you know what they did please let me know. I want to fix it.. Thanks

It's the metering. 100-210-260 on the 99+. 150-210-260? on the 98. Think of it as if the temp changed 10° the distance the needle moves on the 98 guage is greater than on the 99+ therefore you can see it. When I drove my friend's `98 SS that's the first thing I noticed after a hard run (he was with me). I do see mine move but nowhere near as much.

I'd be interested to know the difference, too. My '98 T/A really made an attempt to be accurate. It reduced a full mark after my 170 t-stat went in. I put a 160 t-stat in my SS, and the needle is in the EXACT same position as it was stock. It sits a needle-width below 210 degrees no matter what. I've watched the temp vary from 178 degrees to 200 degrees with AutoTap, and the needle doesn't move. <img src="images/icons/confused.gif" border="0"> I might end up installing an aftermarket coolant and trans temp guage in a guage pod.

So can this be fixed by putting the 98 gauge in?
