Default LS1 Hot Cam or LS6 cam?

Looking to get a cam for my '98 LS1 A4. I am seeing that I am going to have idle problems with the Hot Cam, but the LS6 Cam is a straight replacement with no idle problems(hince no payment to reprogram my computer). Just curious if anyone know if the HP gain on the LS6 cam is worth the time and money? Also this is the 2002 Z06 cam with springs, which is producing 405HP in the new Vette. Any info is appreciated. Thanks,

well first, the hotcam is a pretty radical cam in terms of drivablility. in an A4, you have your hands full or will need custom programing.

as for the LS6 cam, in my opinion, it is simply not worth it in terms of power to money. guys are really only pulling 10-17 RWHP with them. the ZO6 is a lot more than a different cam and springs.

there are a lot of good automatic cams by vendors on this site that maintain good idle and power. much more than the ls6 cam.

Daniel, I believe you will have some issues with the '02 LS6 cam. I recall that the '02 LS6 heads have valves that are .10" longer to compensate for the smaller base circle of the cam. Longer push rods should equalize the valvetrain geometry, but I would carefully research this before ordering the cam. There are ways to tame the Hotcam's idle. For instance, I use a manually controlled IAC, via an old-style choke cable, to obtain a rock solid idle and quick startup.

When I talked to the guy at Jay Fisher Pontiac, he said that the .10" difference wouldn't be a problem because the tolerance of play in the factory LS1 lifter seats. He was saying that it would only lessen the play in the factory lifters. He also said that I would hear about the difference, and that is why he gave me all this info. Does this sound legit? As for money, he quoted me $180 for the cam, and $84 for the springs. Not bad when the Hot Cam is $364, and I have to do something for the idle(more money). What do ya think?

Also if you know of any other good cams, for about the same price. Let me know. I realize that the Vette is not just a cam, but the cam with a Z06 intake...and headers has to make some power difference. Most aftermaket cams I have seen are 300+ for just the cam without springs. Any recommendations would be awsome. Thanks for all the help.

If I were you, i'd be looking at a single duration cam, which doesn't have too much lift. Here are some great ones for what your looking for (or at least what i *think* your looking for)

MMS----> 218/218 55X 114
TR-----> 220/220 55X 114
MTI----> B1 Cam

If your gonna spend the money on a cam, spend the xtra money and go with one of these cams , or one simitlar to it, mentioned above. It kills me to see some people put in these LS-6 cams, because there not going to gain that much power out of them and theres aftermarket cams that will idle just as good as it in an A4. Good luck with your setup, and do lots of research and asking around.

I suggest you get the B1, i have the hotcam in my A4 and it is an awesome cam, and i don't have any PCM tuning, but i do have some driveability issues. for example, on cold start ups the car surges and idle hunts until the engine is warm, once the engine is warm it all goes away and the car drives like a dream with no idle problems. it all depends on what you are willing to put with concerning driveability. The hotcam is an awesome cam, but you have to be sure you will be willing to put up with some idle problems, you will also have idle problems with the B1, but not as bad as the hotcam. No matter what cam you get chances are you will idle problems in your A4 without tuning, it's just the way the **** hits the fan. just my $.02
