Default what are some things that cause low timing?

I have had a low timing problem for a while, 18 degrees with 3 to 2 degrees KR.What are the first things ya'll would check,what would you rule out first!I dont know where to start.thanks <img src="gr_sad.gif" border="0">

I thought I sould mention that I havent used the nitrous because of this. <img src="graemlins/gr_cry.gif" border="0" alt="[whiner]" />

In my experiences Tempeture has killed me as well as 91 octane gas..

You might try getting a MAF-Translator to see if you can lean the car out a bit, or maybe just try swapping to a ported stock MAF. Hypertech tuning typically gives us about 3 degrees most of the time.

Keep your coolant temp below 185F (use a 160F Thermostat).

There are lots of things that can drop your timing :

- rich mixture
- knock retard
- torque management (A4 only)
- high engine temp

and to a lesser extent

- clogged air filter/fuel filter
- vacuum leak


What have you done to try to fix it so far ?

spark timing is a product of rpm, load and temp, basically speaking. you might have a foul sensor. if high temps or heavy loads are sensed, timing will retard. do you have a scanning tool? check IAT, engine temp and MAF. MAF should be about 3lb/min at idle, 30lb/min at WOT. the temp sensors speak for themselves. also, you say you're picking up KR. do you have headers? you might have a bad Knock sensor. disconnect one cylindr at a time to find out. or, you may actually have true knock. bad gas, engine too hot, too lean. you may have a foul injector leaning out a cylinder.
