Repost of "dissapeared" post - $1500 to spend on mods please give feedback.
Well, I had posted this yesterday but it somehow dissapeared into cyberspace. Anyhow, after checking the extra funds for spendig on the car it looks like I have about $1500 to spend this spring. Here is a list of the modsI plan on getting, please give me any feedback or ideas as well as how much performance improvement I should get both in SOTP and est. 1/4 mile. I'm really hoping these mods will be very noticeable all together and I'll be saying weeks later that "damn this car is alot faster than it was last year".
1.) Rear Tires - 275/40/17 Nitto DR's
2.) BMR SFC's
3.) HPP III (For now, LS1-Edit later)
4.) ASP Underdrive Pulley
5.) Hooker 3" Cat Back Exhaust
6.) MTI or other Ported TB
7.) Battery Relocation Kit for Trunk
My current mods are in Sig.
Thanks everyone !
- Mitch

Hi Mitch! How ya doin’
1) Great choice! That will really make life a lot easier in the traction department with that ST3500 you have. I have these and I love them. They also seem to handle/corner/brake about 90 to 95% as good as my F1s did.
2) This one is a great mod! You can’t go wrong with SFCs, and you’ll love the way the car handles afterward. I noticed a big difference after I put my SLP SFCs on. Any brand/type will be a big improvement, but it just really depends on how much you want to spend and whether you want to weld or not. I wanted to install them in my garage, so welding was out of the question. The bolt-ons have been great for me for over a year now and they’ve never come loose. Good mod.
3) Only if you don’t plan to get a custom tune or LS1 edit. I know you mentioned to me before that LS1 edit might be in your future, and I know you can also re-sell the HPP, but still if you do buy one I’d say to get one used so you won’t loose much if you re-sell it. You really need to get LS1 edit/custom tuning though; trust me when I say you’re going to love your car without TM!!
4) Another good one. I’m planning on one of these two when my cam goes in this spring. People usually see about a .1 to .15 of ET reduction and 1 to 1.5 mph of trap speed gain. Not bad for $180 plus belts.
5) I don’t really know anything about this one as I don’t know anyone who has it. People on the board that have it sure seem to like it though, but I think someone said the tips don’t last long before rusting.
6) I don’t know too much about this one, other than the fact that most don’t really see any gains unless it’s at least a heads/cam car, and the only real gains seem to be when you go bigger cubes/forced induction.
7) Always nice to move weight over the axle as opposed to in the engine bay.
Hope my input helps you Mitch, and good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I would skip the cat back and buy a set of Mac's/orp and a cut out. Everything else looks good.

Thanks for your input RPM !
My thought on the HPP III was that a.) LS1 Edit will take a while before it ever comes out for the 2001 cars and b.) it will probably be tough to find a used HPP III for a 2001 car - so I'll just buy a new one. I can get one for $295 because I have a $50 coupon for MMS !
The TB is only $100 and most people see about 4-5 RWHP on a mildly modded LS1 ... granted more so on a good H/C setup - but that is the way I'll eventually go so why not get it and bolt it on now for a few HP
I've heard the same thing once or twice about the Hooker Tips, I may get a MAC 3" Cat Back as well - it is only another $100 and the single 3.5" tips are chrome farther back and probably better material. Not many people have the MAC catback though. I like the sound of the Hooker from the files I've heard. I'm still up in the air a bit on that one.
Hurley, the stock SS exhaust is a BIG restriction. If I had the SLP SS Exhaust I would leave it alone. I will end up doing a midlength header of some kind next winter or in the fall but I want to also keep the CATs to easily pass NYS emissions and keep the sound somewhat quiet. With my 3500 stall converter, anything too loud would be unbearable and no fun to drive anymore.
Thanks for the input guys !!
Regards,
Mitch

Sorry, I should have specified that I am not (yet) tearing apart the engine on a car that has under 10k miles. Heads/Cam will be a 2003 project.
This is an all bolt-ons only purchase.
thanks again guys !

Don’t feel bad if you do Mitch. I’ve got 5,000 on the clock and it’s getting a cam Who needs a warranty?

The hooker catback is badass! You will love the sound of it in person. All of those mods look like they will combine to give you the effect you want. Just watch out on that relocation kit, seems some people have problems with the front raising up when they move the wait back and some have had problems with the cable running to the front of car. Just something to think about. Good luck!

A lid and a K&N air filter and a ram air are easy enough to install and are probably good for a few extra MPG!

You are loco my friend I never liked doing serious internal engine mods until I get 2 years on the car - just in case it needed an engine replacement or repair under warranty. Also, on a car that I intend on keeping a long time, it makes more sense to me to wait till the drivetrain starts to get a little tired and beat on to replace it and/or freshen it up ala heads/cam/pushrods/springs/timing chain, etc. - why replace new stuff that you just paid for.
I just always follow a logical progression of mods by doing all bolt-ons the first 2 years and then if I still enjoy the car, it runs good, and is solid over all, I begin internal work or more advanced mods.
Hopefully we can meet up sometime RPM
Dan, Thanks for the info on the Hooker Cat Back ! The sound files I heard from it were great but I had read a few people complaingin a while back about the quality of the stainless tips and that they look bad quickly. At only $279 it is still a cheap try !
Later guys,
Mitch
