Default SBC question, tightening con rod bolts and rod bolt stretch????

First off, sorry this is not an LS1 question, but I figured someone here would know.

I am working on building a SBC 408.
The books I have say to measure connection rod bolt stretch when tightening to determine more accurate clamping force.

The books don't tell me a particular tightening sequence for for each rod cap and I guessing that you shoulding tighten one bolt fully with the other loose.

What is the proper way to incrementally tighten each bolt while measuring rod bolt stretch? I only have one rod bolt stretch indicator.

Should I alternate tightening between the two bolts on each rod and write down the strecth increments until desired stretch is reached?
That way seems like more measurement error would be induced.

What's the proper way?

Alternate in increments of the final torq/3

Tourque to tang side down first at a very light torque just enough to bring the caps together. Alternate side to side useing a minumum of 3 steps on each bolt.
