Spring dampner piece? Wouldn't be part of a valve seat, eh?

Looks like the inner spring to me.They are flat metal that is curved into a spiral.I would pull the valve covers and see what you could find.It may be hard to see.If thats all it is changing it may make it ok.I lost a rocker arm on my 2000 silverado w 1500 miles.I got roller bearings and metal out of the pan.I niow have 70000.It was scarry but all was ok.

That looks very similar to a 'C' shaped piece I found in my oil...along with many needle bearings from my rocker arm. Could be the snap ring? that holds the bearings in. One may be about to crap out on you. You should be able to check those yourself to make sure. I have pics I can send you if you like.

I saw a pic of heads with dual springs, it looks like the inner spring...

Nick pull the covers off and look for a missing piece and order a new spring setup

Are you running a Stroker motor? A friend of mine (LT1) has a 383, and the crank actually sheared off part of his dipstick! Probably way off on this...

I talked with Tom and he thinks its probably a spring dampner too. Does anyone have a pic of their LS1 with the valve covers off so i know what im looking for? is the dampner above or below the spring?

You found a quarter on your drain plug magnet, LOL.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Good luck in finding out what is wrong. Hopefully it won't be anything too serious.

941's & others have an inner dampner that is part of the spring, but not a true 2nd spring. Dampens harmonic vibrations and gives strength or something.

One of my mechs broke a bunch of mine by using the wrong retainers once. Which retainers & springs you using?

I'd pull the valve covers & inspect all springs. Replace as needed. You don't want to bend a valve. The outer spring is probably still intact. With my wrong retainer setup I broke around 6 dampners, but the springs were all ok and no bent valves. I caught the problem pretty quick tho and replaced all retainers/springs within 2 weeks of install as soon as the mech said he used the wrong retainers. I wouldn't push RPM's over 3k 'til you inspect.

Just an FYI, my car ran completely normal (besides the SES light) when my rocker arm crapped out on me. No noise at all.

I had both valve covers off, everything looks normal, nothing broken off or missing that i could see. One thing that does bother me is on the pass. side valve cover the oil return line (right??) in the back was disconnected <img src="images/icons/confused.gif" border="0"> I guess I'm gonna have the car towed out to speed inc. any other suggestions?
