Default Stupid pick-up tube bolt! Help!

Hey everyone

Im tring to get this stupid pick-up tube bolt out. Ive been going at it for about 30 min now. my question is how freakin long is this damn bolt?? ive been turning and turning with a gear wrench and i wont come out! the threads dont feel stripped or anything, it turns easily, but it seems like this thing never ends. i can see where the pickup tube is dropping, and it is loose, but it seems like its not getting any looser. Whats the deal?

I had to jam my pinky fingers in there and work it out like that. It was a pain in the *** cuz I couldnt get the oil pan to drop that much.

Hold the pickup tube up into the oil pump. I did the same thing, and turned out that having the tube hanging down was causing the bolt to **** to the side and bind such that it wouldn't just fall loose. I finally realized that it should be coming out, pushed the tube up, pulled back on the bolt, and it came out. It sounds stupid, but with that little room to work you can miss all kinds of things that would otherwise be very obvious to you.

That makes sense ill try that tomarrow.(have to go to work now)

and what do you mean dont use a wrench. how else are you supposed to get that thing out. theres no way to get a socket on it. besides im pretty sure the bolt isnt stripped because the threads feel fine.

Just loosen it with a wrench first then the rest with your fingers. When you go to put it on use your fingers then the wrench tightn it but not to much. And when you put it all back together make surethat you tightned the bolt when the tube was straight in and not angled in any way. Last thing you want is to pinch that o-ring.

Gauge is right. I've done it a few times now. But now mine falls right out after getting really loose.

stuff a rag or 2 down in the oil pan to keep the bolt from falling. pry down on the oil pan a little, you should be able to get to it with your fingers. use a magnet pen...what ever you do dont drop it in there.

Yes!! This cannot be stressed enough. I ended dropping it about 3 time before i got the first couple of threads in there. But dont forget to get those rags out once you are done. Then youll have worse problems!!!

There was a thread on here a while back about this...guy left a rag in his oil pan. Started the motor, sounded funny for about a half a second then it started spitting out shredded rag bits out the exhaust. He shut it off and looked at it. Turns out the crank grabbed up that rag and tried to eat it...needless to say there were shreds of rag everywhere, in the intake and exhaust ports on the heads, stuck between the valves, crank bearings, etc. Not good!

well to put it back on shouldnt be a problem. im going to tie some fishing line around it, so incase i do drop(which im sure i will) i can just yank it back out. but ill also stuff some rags in for re-assurance. Ill try what gauge said tomarrow. if that doesnt work them im completely lost.
I know it...im gunna spend as much time on getting this damn bolt in and out them im going to spend on the rest of the cam/spring/chain/oil pump swap.

YES!!! finally got it out. i actually had a few threads left. after that i used what gauge said, and the little guy came right out.......now to take a break...then stick the new pump on. im going to be taking the new oil pump apart, to make sure the o-ring doesnt get pinched, because theres no way i want to mess with this damn pick-up tube again.
