Im trying to get together some money and get a hotcam for my car and I know where I can get some cheap 5.3 heads and might be able to have them worked over at a local speed shop.
I think around 390 to 405 rwhp is possible depending on how well the heads turn out. Anyone else know a cheaper way to go on a heads and cam setup??

Sean, I know its tough to spend alot of money on mods as a college student with a fat car note. But, I'd not even consider heads unless you were buying exactly what you want. This isn't the area to skimp in, the heads are the most important part of the motor. Instead of looking for some el-cheapo hack job heads, just put a good cam in there and go with all the bolt-ons instead. Then save up for a 12-bolt and go run 11s all day with stock heads.
Then, when you graduate college, buy yourself a 422ci setup for a gift.

I was going to try and get Ben's 5.3 heads and have Nicken's Bros. port them for me. They dont do work for motors other than pro-stock motors but since David Nickens lives down the street from me I was hoping I could get them to do the heads for me. He did the heads and intake on the motor for my old bosses jet boat. It is a 540ci. that made 698 hp on the dyno with no break in time and on pump gas
more than likely I will end up doing a cam and 12 (hopefully before summer starts)
I have an NX kit on the car right now but I want to get it fixed before I actually spray it. I really want low 11's next fall

Sean, learn from my expensive mistakes bro. Upgrade the drivetrain first, then start worrying about power modifications. You can have all the power in the world, and it doesn't do you any good on the back of a tow truck.
1. Clutch
2. 12-bolt
3. driveshaft
4. slicks/runners
5. power modifications
Besides, you could always jet that nitrous kit up to make up for any el-cheapo heads you don't have LOL!

Good point Tony, maybe I should see how high I can manage to get on the bolt on list. Where is the best place to get a 12 bolt from? I think I could probably handle the install myself so I dont have to worry about that too much.

You may want to try ebay for some LS1 heads. You can take the heads to a shop and have them ported and polished. I would save money and get another cam from one of the sponsors. Look at the GP section for cams. Sponsors and GP section
