Put drivers side header on, I can see light through the gasket????
I'm putting MAC headers on the car, and after getting the gasket on (it's like a three-layer metal gasket) and torquing the bolts down to the recommended specs, I have a shoplight under the car and if I look down I can see light through the layers of metal on the gasket... Is this bad, or is the seal around the header pipe itself all that's important????? Once I get this car running, the last thing I need is an exhaust leak. Also, the header is DAMN close to the steering linkage, is that normal???
I had the advantage of being able to lift the engine off the mount to easily slide the header in, otherwise it would've been a bitch.

where the header mounts to the block, looking down on it, you can see light through the gasket between the pipes. the pipes themselves look pretty well sealed.
Why did you need to lift the motor? Just take the valve covers off and those headers would fall right into place.
As for the seal, that sounds strange to me. Maybe your header bolts are too long and need to be shortened a bit...they could be bottoming out in the head before they apply the force nessisary to the header flange. Try grinding the tip off a bolt or get some ARP bolts

well, I've got nothing else in but the engine & tranny, and the header still didn't want to "fall into place", so instead of phucking with it i went the path of least resistance.
the passenger side looks like it will slide right into place, though.

Sounds to me like the flanges may not be flat. The only way to be sure would be to remove the headers and check the flatness of the header flanges with a straightedge.

If this is the part between the pipes, then you are ok, you just dont want these gaps where the pipe meets the head.
