Default 10W-30 or 5W-30

I was told that LS1's are supposed to get 5W-30 instead of 10W-30. WTF?? Did I miss something?? <img src="images/icons/confused.gif" border="0">

There are different factors that determine which weight oil you should use. Ex: Miles on the motor, weather conditions, driving habits, etc......

If you're driving a brand new LS1, 5w30 would be a better choice until the rings and seals get some miles on them and have time to seat properly.

If your car has less than 50K, this is what I recommend: 5w30 in the winter time, reason being that 5w30 is thinner at startup and would be better for cold applications since there isn't as much friction caused by heat. Then 10w30 in the summer for a little added protection when starting your car while it's 100 degree's outside.

If you have over 50K on the car, I would run 10w30 all the time. Some people actually see less oil consumption when going with a 10w30 as opposed to the 5w30, but not everyone. The bottom end will need more protection as time goes on, more abuse is applied, and miles are put on the car.

I like 0W-30 (Mobil, Redline or Amsoil synthetic only), better mileage and power. <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0"> <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[Burnout]" />

I ran 500 mile son dino and then switched to 10W-30 Mobil 1. Have ran Mobil 1 since. Good or bad? Oh yeah...the Firehawk isnt my daily driver...just a weekend car and occasional weekday car, weather pending.

Read and understand Damian's reply. He mentions many of the factors that will determine when to change your oil. Most important is time and miles from your last oil change.

Enjoy your cars.
