Do I have an oil pump problem?

Do I have an oil pump problem?
Here is what happened. I went on a little road trip today to pick up my new wheels and tires and to visit my sister. About 6 hours on the highway. Then, I started my car when I was leaving a gas station. The "check gauges" light came on and I saw my oil gauge was at zero!? About 10 seconds passed with my engine running before I saw the gauge and shut the car off. A minute later I started it again and it was fine. Do you think my oil pump was actually not working for those few seconds, or just some quirk with the gauge? Would this be a sign that the pump is going bad? Anyone have this happen? Sorry for all the questions, but it kind of freaks me out.

Sounds like your pump is going bad. This is NOT just an ’00 issue. Jake99SS on this board is in the process of loosing his SECOND stock oil pump on an early ’99 car. The way you described the situation sounds just like how everyone else describes pump failure.

Sure sounds like the bypass staying/sticking open. Scary. From all the posts I've read about oil pumps in the past year, startup is when it happens.

Your car has given you a warning! Take advantage of this and act now before it totally craps out on you and causes serious damage! Call Nick at ARE (or whoever you like to do business with) and get yourself a ported oil pump. It's cheap insurance when you consider the alternative. Besides, you'll sleep a whole lot better at night! Been there, done that! Good luck!

Yeah, I'm actually thinking about doing exactly that. I'm also thinking about changing my mod plans and go ahead and get a cam package and install it and a new pump at the same time. I had planned to get a ram air hood next month, Hookers in March, then a cam. But this has me concerned so much that I'm gonna get an ARE pump and cam in 2 weeks. Spent the whole day trying to decide what cam lol! I started my car 4-5 times today and it didn't happen again, but it's bugging the hell out of me.

That sucks Mike. I'm worried about this same problem. But look at it this way: if you have to replace it, it just gives you an excuse to put a cam in while you're in there. That's going to be my excuse.

Lol, it is a good excuse for a cam I have a feeling that the pump is fine, but little things like that make me parinoid. Right now I'm leaning toward a 222/222 566/566 114. But I'll probably change my mind as usual. So when are the mac's going on? BTW, I got new wheels yesterday (sig). My TA will be easy to identify in town now

Yes. One of our members in TFbM (Toronto F-body Motorsports) had the oil pump go south after only a month or so on his brand new '01 WS6 during this past summer. Fortunately, he noticed that the gauge was reading 0 oil pressure as soon as he started it up that day, shut it right down and had it flatbedded to the dealer, who kept the car for 10 days, but did end up replacing the pump under warranty.

Black rims? Awesome! I'd like to have some myself! It's going to be awhile until the headers go on. I have insurance due next month along with my monthly car payment, plus I have to save up for a new clutch and clutch install. Then I have to do all the 'mods' to the MACs, get them ceramic coated, and buy bullet mufflers for the Y-pipe. I can't wait!
